Title: Potato problem
Post by: Paulgul on January 16, 2009, 16:36:53
I have a problem with some of the potatoes I grew last year, they have a dark ring around just below the skin. I've posted a picture in my gallery.
The variety is Wilja
Any suggestions of what the problem is?
Thanks,
Paul

The password is acreshort
This forum is new to me, I thought the password was for me if I wanted upload pictures or delete them. If everyone has to have the password, whats the point.
Still not to worry.

No can't see your photo either but could either be damage due to cold or ring rot. The later means the tubers got too cold and the later is a bacterial disease.

Ok I can see it now. That could also be net necrosis caused by the leaf roll virus...for some reason I read Dark ring and turned it into black ring!

i think it is defintely Net necrosis, if you cut a tuber in the other direction at the stem end....that is the end opposite the rose where all the buds are....you should have a pattern of dots and streaks in the vascular tissue. It's transmitted by virus and there are some potato varieties that are less susceptible. http://www.potato.org.uk/department/knowledge_transfer/pests_and_diseases/ref.html?item=50

Kea, thanks for the reply, that link was for leaf roll (is that the same) and says 'generally no tuber symptoms'

To reply to myself, I've done a google search for Net necrosis and found some tuber picures looking very similar to mine, thanks again.

I've received a pm from another chap who suggests it may be a chilling problem in storage. He gave me this link
http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/factsheets/Potato_Detection.htm

referring to photo 8b, the article mentions it can be confused with Net necrosis, as the potatoes are stored in a garden shed and with the low temperatures we've been having this is a possibility

Did they have the dark ring before storage? Cold damage was my first thought as you see it a lot in supermarket bought potatoes when they store them too cold.

Don't know that, we've only just started using this particular variety in the last week or so
