Title: take away food cartons
Post by: mememe72 on January 12, 2009, 17:47:59
are the plastic trays you get from take aways deep enough to start seedlings in.  We have very narrow window sills (the 2 we have) and I can just about fit these tibs on the window sill,  Some are deeper than others, also someone has given us quite a few drink cups (the ones you get from hot drink machines) would these be good as a follow on pot.  Oh and we have also been given a huge bag of loo roll holders to use as seed pots anybody tried these.  Sorry so many questions !!!!!!!

The plastic trays would be ok for shallow rooted veg that need pricking out .
Loo roll tubes would be great for veg like beans and peas. Just plant the entire roll into the ground to cut down on root distrubance when the time is right to plant out.

Hope this makes sense  :)

Oh I forgot to mention, you need drainage holes in the bottom and perhaps use the lids as saucers (saves your window sills)  ;)

I use the opaque chinese restaurant containers to start seeds in as they fit perfectly on my windowsills.  I don't do drainage holes - I wet the compost thoroughly before sowing the seeds then seal the container in a plastic sandwich bag with a wire tie.  I leave them like this until the seedlings are just big enough to prick out.  They get pricked out into individual yoghurt pots (with holes in the bottom), 6 of which sit perfectly in the take-away container so they can stay on the windowsills.  Works for me!

None of the takeaways round here use the plastic containers, so we have to collect them when we go on holiday! ;D
