Hiya peeps, wilkos have got their seed spuds and onions in (in pontefract store)
plus rubarb and strawberry, ive opted for First Earlys Aaron Pilot (£3.00 for 3 kilo) second earlys (maris peer £3.00 for 3 kilo again) and my old faithful (Stuttgarter Onions £1.odd for half a million) theese onions never let me down (whoops thats put the mockers on them). ps theyve got maincrop in aswell but dont know what variety because her indoors brought the others back with her from shopping, ill be popping down t ;D ;Do wilkos tommorow to check out their other goodies, to save any embarrasment ill admit now that i may have the earlys wrong way round ie (pilots 2nd earlys and so on) happy browsing in your local wilkinsons (wilkos ;D ;D ;D) :D
Roughly how many spuds are in a 3KG bag, so I can compare prices, please?
IllHAVE A BUTCHERS NOW FOR YOU AND GET BACK TO YOU IN A MOMENT ;D ;D
QuoteRoughly how many spuds are in a 3KG bag, so I can compare prices, please?
In old money I work on about 6 to the pound so I guess that must be around13/14 to the kilo so say 40 to a 3 kilo bag.
Obviously big/small seed will alter the numbers slightly.
But six to the pound I find is a good average!
Hi Caroline, ive just counted the maris peer and there are 71 seed spuds in the 3 kilo bag, ive not counted the aaron pilots but there seems to be around the same number, hope this helps, ;D ;D
Hi TEE GEE, i was plesently supprised at how many seeds were in the 3 kilo bag so im well happy, seems like a bargain to me cos there a nice size seed aswell ;D :o
been into wilko in Ely and there are lots of empty shelves in the gardening area so i guess they have not had the onion and spuds in yet. I am hoping to get to the east of england potato day on the 14th though and will probably get my spuds there.
Thanks,oc. With places like T&M asking 3.99 for 20 tubers, I'll definitely be going back to Wilko. :D
Wonder if the Wilkies in Sutton have them in. I'm gonna give them a ring tomorrow
I've ordered mine from the growers, for delivery this month, might try to get them to delay until next month.
we're getting a delivery end of january from a new wholesale supplier, he's charging from 1.60 per kilo but they are getting delivered :)
Drat, drat, drat. That is a good price for seed spuds. I ordered mine at the allotment shed as I was on shed duty that day and the secretary was saying that no one had ordered any potatoes. I felt so guilty that I ordered 3 types at £15+ (I think that was the price) per 3 kilo bag.

I think you've got that wrong, unless your secretary is on the fiddle! ;D
No spuds at tamworth branch yet, Think our allotment shop gets them in towards end of this week around £2.80 for 3kg.
The price for our lottie shop seed potatoes in 45p per pound for this year.
My fault I STILL try to buy from small independent shops as I don't want the large conglomerates to control all our foodstuffs and othr purchases. Trouble is I think I have far too many spuds for the space - how should I grow the rest. I have heard about growing in bins, bags & tubs but have been told that grow bag contents are best - but growbags are so expensive. Would it be all right to grow them in bins, bags & rubs in ordinary soil.

Charlotte potatoes 2kg bag I got 24 seed
Lottie lou, £15 for a 3kg bag is daylight robbery. They should be ashamed of themselves.
As for growing in containers, I had extra seeds this year so put 4 in an inside out 75L compost bag (pierced with holes) and filled with sieved soil. I put a few inches of soil in the bottom, then the spuds and covered them with a few inches. When they started to shoot, I topped them up to cover up to the top few leaves and kept going until the bag was full. I did the same with another compost bag inside an old incinerator bin. The container potatoes were better than those in the ground - less sluggy and scabby, but maybe slightly lower yield. You need to watch the watering and make sure they don't dry out.
will definatley check out wilko in Rugby tomorrow ;) :) :)
Phoned the Sutton branch and they will have them in towards the end of the week. Thank goodness, phew!
everything seems to be a bit pricey a t wilkos this year. specialist potatoes were 10 tubers for £1.50 last year, this year they are 5 tubers for £1.00 / shades x
LL check your lottie prices I think you or your secertary have made a mistake, even £15 for three bags is far too much for a lottie shop. :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D

The number of spuds in a 3Kg bag is not particularly important.
If you get small ones, you get more but then you plant them closer together
If you get large ones, you get less, but plant further apart and they'll grow bigger.
One 3Kg bag will do two 25ft rows.
For an 'average' spud (what ever that may be) you'll get between 45 and 55 in a 3kg bag.
Ie plant at one every 12 ".
For a bag with about 70 small 'uns in, plant every 9" - again you'll get two 25ft rows.
Thanks for the advice Ceres. Will check the spud prices when I receive the order perhaps it was a misprint or mor likely, I read it wrong. If not, I am going to be eating an awful lot of spuds next year.
The Wilko's in York today had about 3 bags of spuds left- hopefully they'll get some more soon- their whole gardening section was practically empty!
Wyevale have got theirs in, a very good range, though no Lady Christl, all 3.49 or 3.99 for 3kg.
My rockets cost me £2.90 for 3kg and the bag contains 48 spuds. ;D ;D ;D
Good Choice Kev (we grow 'em every year) !! ;)
Went and helped unload the seed spuds at allotment shop this morning after work, came away with
2x3kg Cara
2x3kg Maxine
1x3kg Sante
1x1.5kg Smile
1x3kg Rocket
£2.60p per bag, not a bad price to pay.
The reason I am having so many is the present state of the country do not know how long i will be in a job for and i look on it that anything I can grow could help reduce the bills later in the year.
that's a lot of allotment taken up with spuds!! ;)
About 120 sq yards, or between a third and a half of a standard plot... assuming he puts them in with the spacing I use for my 18kg... ::)
Got mine today from Wilkies all bags £3 each.
Rocket 39 tubers ;D
Maris Peer 35 tubers :)
Desiree 30 tubers :-\
Didn't buy any seeds though.

Presumably, that is because they have emptied the area of Xmas rubbish ready to stock it for the season ? That was certainly the case in Chester at the weekend.
Wilkos in Bournemouth dont have hem in yet but they are starting to fill the shelves with pots, compost ect so they wont be long now :)
I bought most of mine from The Range...
Smile
Swift
Homeguard

We unloaded 60 x 25kg sacks of spuds to be sold in our lottie shop from this weekend. Broken down into 3kg bags to sell in our lottie shop. 18 varieties are only £2 per 3kg, 1 variety is £2.20 and another is £2.60.

maris bard
lady christl
nadine
saxon
the first sign of sun and there in ;D ;D
With it being our first year on the plot, I thought I'd try cover a fair bit with potatoes. I already have some Maris & PFA so had to really talk myself out of buying loads more at Wilkies. I got some Arran Pilot (....and some strawberries & shallots).
Looks like there'll be more room for lottie stuff in our Wilkies when the Xmas tat is (finally!) gone :)
I went in today and they're just beginning to put the gardening stuff out. Seed spuds and onion sets will be there middle of next week. But, unfortunately, they did have the seeds out ;)
In addition to their own brand they've got new ones from Johnsons' called World Kitchen and World Botanicals (flowers). The World Kitchen ones are unusual varieties (I spotted the very long pointy cabbage) and not too expensive either, all under £2.
They had some fruit bushes - their Right Price brand are £1 - rasps, blackcurrants etc. The 'expensive' fruit is £4 - lemon, kiwi fruit, fig, grapevine etc.
Also went to the 99p Shop. Almost no gardening stuff yet apart from a few hanging baskets and hand tools.
Went in today and thank heavens I did as they were almost out of spuds. Got 6kg of aran pilot, 6 of maris peer and 6 of desiree. Also little mini bags of 5 tubers so got 1 of pink fur apple and 1 of rooster. Not tried either of those before, so though I'd do those in pots out the garden. Mind you lugging nearly 20 kilos of spuds up the high street was interesting!
