Title: Garden Pearl tomatoes- unimpressed
Post by: rdak on August 31, 2004, 11:04:59
Grew some Garden Pearl cherry tomatoes- free packet with Kitchen Garden mag. Taste was so disappointing- tasted of nothing, just like cheap tomatoes from the supermarket. Anyone else tried these?

Ross,

I have to agree, the colour also was a bit insipid, almost pink rather than a nice deep red. Tumbler were far better in a side by side taste test.

I have oven dried loads though as this intensifies the flavour some what.

Absolutely - I wish I had grown a few Gardener's Delight. My poor husband is valiantly plodding his way through a handful of the garden pearls every day with his lunch, but his silence speaks volumes - he normally brags about my supplies.
Nice tip about the oven drying - I will try that - thanks.

Mm - the oven drying really sweetens the taste, very nice.   :)

i grew red pear toms which were also somewhat insipid - since found out that they are specially brown as low acid types for folks with dodgy digestions. Is there a posting where people have compared the tastes of various veg as it seems that the blurbs in catalogues are always exaggerated. would love to know what to avoid. Took advice on spuds this year and was well pleased with the Kestrel but less so with Red Duke of York. Tell me - has this been covered already and if so, where?
cheers, suzy
