Title: B&Q grapevine?
Post by: nilly71 on January 06, 2009, 07:49:07
Has anyone bought or know about the large grapevines in B&Q?

They are about 4' high and 4" thick, normally about £70. My local B&Q has them reduced to about £35. At 4" think, they must be a few years old.

The trouble with b&q plants are they do not know how to look after them. I have seen plants suffering with the dry and also seen them in buckets of water. You should be able to get a decent one for less than a tenner. Big or small they both have to settle in and will not crop properly for a couple of years. I think mine is a called hamburg, it is black and  meant for wine, but it gives out loads of small sweet fruits. I have a have a white in the hedge that will not ripen but the birds and squirrels love it.

Thanks Ace.
I have a small white champion grape that i bought a couple of months ago, It's about 1" thick (if that) and i thought a mature vine would be giving me returns while the small one is growing for a couple of years.

I might offer them £20 :o as it's been sitting there for a while and not very well labeled.

You will still have to grow it long then trim  the buds and flowers off in the first couple of years. Then when you have a decent long vine you start the laterals. These are the fruiting branches. Your small white will then be doing the same as your expensive b&q vine.

A lot of gardening is 10% doing then 90% waiting.Lack of patience is one of the reasons a lot of new gardeners give up.

You will have a great crop of salad stuff soon, In the meantime you will be planting and growing next winters veg. How many bunches of grapes cane you get for the money you are going to pay for a gamble at b&q.

Get some strawberry plants if you want some quick fruit. Somebody should be clearing their runners out somewhere on your allotments.

Take a look at http://www.winegrowers.info/index.htm
You could get 8 or 9 vines (including delivery) for roughly the same price as the reduced B&Q one. They would all be named varieties from a reliable source & in a couple of years they will all start producing fruit.

Not worth it, a plant from a one or two year old cutting will get off to a better start and start producing just as soon.
