Seem some of you like to fight with words and insults.
I suggest we settle this on the appropriate field of battle the veg garden.
Well I challenge you all to biggest tomato contest.
The rules are simple you all verse me ,biggest outside grown tomato wins.
And of course the prize besides bragging rights,10 oz in silver coins (current value £76 as of DEC 31 2008) (which i shall provide)
and the admission the side that wins is best at gardening.
What say you or are up for the challenge!!!!!!!
Or are you all just all talk and insults.
The winners will be judged by an independent panel use pictures of tomatoes
next a special chart that prevents cheating.
Fair do's. I Volunteer to be the external verifier.
It will be a requirement of the competition that I view any contenders fruit while still growing on the plant and again at measurement time. Competition open strictly to UK growers only.
And have you seen the price of flour lately to make your crumble with
eric the contest will be open to all comers Americans, British,AU, EU, RF and any other country on this planet. The judges will be from a independent source. Eristic you are not an independent source. the rules will be that same as those used by another garden forum web used for there 2008 biggest tomato contest.
Richard Kinson I don't worry about price flour since I grow my own wheat.
Oh i do love that crusty top on the crumble
What did you say TGG " you are a tweat "
Richard guess your to poor to put up £76. Since you mum took away your allowance.
TGG guess i am to poor
I hardly think that growing one big tomato makes anyone a good gardener, so why not cover a broader range of veg,
Longest leek measured to the button
Largest leek, measured to the button and around the cercumfrence
Biggest/heaviest Cabbage
Biggest/heviest Sweede
Biggest Truss of Tomatoe,s
Largest/heaviest Tomato
Largest/heaviest Cauliflower
Largest/ heaviest Parsnip
I am excluded

What a complete waste of time, I grow for taste, but mainly enjoyment. Size does not matter (stop tittering ladies), I know I cannot talk I do also grow commercially, for RHS medals. But we try to beat last years medal, we do not compete with others.
When it comes to prize winning vegetables, they should not really be grown on allotments, these plots were intended to feed families not egos.
Ace I know from reading article in a gardening magazine , that the world record tomato after it won the prize, made 22 tomato sandwiches.
davyw1 how about contest to grow the most by total weight harvest from one seed potato.
Growing old comes naturally .Growing up needs a bit of common sense .
By the way, Who moved that stone ?
after reading this thread somehow I seem to have completely lost the inclination to grow tomatoes ever again...however I do fancy some crumble!
Happy New Year to all, and let peace, harmony and the joy of growing things reign over our plots

Can't we make the RHS the judges? Ie how many veg golds in 2009.
I'll enter the one for biggest blighted crop, or the best use of GM in the veg industry.

I think you need a stronger tether.
I can see my old grandad looking down from above with a rye smile and saying "Don't waste thee time lad ,Tha'll get more sense out of half a plate of mashed potatoes than tha will out of him.,Tha can't educate pork." seems apt somehow.
Well I came in here thinking a tomato contest would be a bit of fun, but it turns out that it's all a load of ego driven nonsense by TGG again. A great gardener in my opinion is not someone who can grow the biggest tomato, but someone who makes mistakes, learns from them and imparts their knowledge to help others to learn, as most of the members here do. I've learned so much from so many different people on here and no doubt I have a lot left to learn. Life is difficult enough without all this animosity. So I've said it before TGG and I'll say it again, if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all.
Surely the best tomato of all isn't the biggest, or the reddest, but the sweetest, most tomato-ey of all. The one that you sink your teeth into and get swept away in an instant to a mediterranean taverna, with the warm sun on your neck and the blue sea lapping at your toes...... ;D
Put me down for a packet of them seed. :)
Sorry TGG but unless you can beat this one I grew for the kids to play on last year, then its a "No contest"
Bet they'd be really good with a large piece of 'fata comple'
(

and some Retsina... or Ouzo... :)
Fork: plastic or fiber glass tomatoes don't count.
In the interests of fair competition will our produce have to be dope tested? If not the veg, then will the grower? looks like I've failed at the first hurdle and my misses says I'm one of the biggest dopes she knows!! ;)

Has she met TGG ?
;D ;D ;D
I don't expect to be able to compete with my tomatoes but would be interested to see the results of this competition.
Some strange replies to this post?
Regards
How about a melon contest.
My wife's got some beauties. Silicon they may be, but she could poke your eye out with them.
Howzabout you all take a Walk on the Wild Side & look at Robbo's post in Watershed? Up to you, natch, but.....g'won, just do it - you know you want to :D
And we LOVE deep discussions bout Monstrous Melons & Titivating Tomatoes there ::)
It is the first time I have hit the ignore button! How liberating. ;D
When does TGG find time to tend his allotment and grow all this fantastic veg?He seems to spend most of his waking hours online upsetting people. I am very new to this site. Only joined just after Christmas and so far TGG has managed to make me very wary of joining in. It didn't take him long to start another thread that has had us all contributing to after his other one was transferred to watershed. Such a pity that he doesn't view this tremendous site the same way as most. That is, a mine of useful information on growing and some truly great people. Sorry if I seem to be very critical but that is just how I have found it. I am going to try and ignore his posts and just read those from real great gardeners.
hiya, jeanbean..welcome to the site, hope you join in with the nice bits :)
Hello and welcome Jeanbean ;D ;D ;D
I hope you enjoy being here and I look forward to reading your posts ;)
Hi Jeanbean, Welcome to the site. You will soon get to know who's who my love. I think you have already sussed some of us.
I had decided to stay out of TGG thing but I feel I must say this.
While TGG does want to wind people up it was quite sickening to see post after post laying into him.
Everything from his nationality to the way he writes.
Someone even suggested they would like to use size nines on him. :o
I would laugh at anyone who criticised my posts in future.
I think the whole thing was a disgusting display and bullying at its worse.
Talk about the punishment far outweighing the crime.
Please members of A4A,think twice about joining in to this kind of thing.
It reminded me of that old film airplane or was it airport, the comedy where they all queued up to punch someone in the face.
I dare say this post won't win me any friends but who needs enemy's with friends like these.
Happy New Year to you.

At last the penny as dropped. ::)
Why get all upset, it's not ME who is criticised/insult/callednames, but FROGLEGS, how can i get upset TTG doe's not know me from Adam nor me him/she/it,it's just one silly name trying to insult another silly name and if ya look at it like that you've got to laugh. :)
Hi
I very rarely post on A4all these days, but reading Betula's post made me think about it. Allotments4all was my favourite website and I recommended it to everyone I talked to about gardening. Not any more.
The posts have made me ashamed and I very rarely log in at all now.
This was such a friendly helpful website posted on by so many knowledgable gardeners - please can we get back to that now, the season is just about to start and there are so many people coming on here looking for help. I am sure some get frightened away.
Let's get back to why we all came here in the first place, and if you see something you don't agree with just ignore it, it's the best way.
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and let's focus on the New and Happy!
T.
My post with the picture of the big tomato was "tongue in cheek" and an attempt at a little humour.
This thread is now way out of line and its about time it was closed.
It made me smile Fork... as does that avatar! ;D
Hi Tulipa, hope you do start to post again :)
Frogslegs,Sorry I do not agree. It is not just a silly name calling another person a silly name.
I do not mind a one to one spat.It is the sight of many people all ganging up on one person that sickens me.We are all people posting ,not silly names.
Look up cyber bullying and read. :(
:) hi Tulippa,
I agree with everything you have said, I only came back to this site recently after having a terrible year for us and was shocked by some of the posts,
Gardeners are supposed to be caring, sharing folk!!!
anyway, we are still making your lovely shepherdess pie ;D ;D
all the best /shades x
p.s I also agree ths thread should be closed, lets start the new year in a positive way
Hear, hear!
Let's concentrate on the gardening and the helpful advice.
And close this thread....

Ah. but he does have quite a few silly names to insult and it has been known on one board for one of his silly names to argue against the posters who are already arguing with one of his other names. He been logged on here with two names. You only have to google thegreatgardener/gridgardener and a few others will turn up. He even had a conversation between 3 of his names at the same time.
There have been polls on him he has upset quit a few forums and set them at each other, just like what is happening now.
Most of the time when he does give advice it is gleaned from a book that he will sometimes refer you too. We all do that I know, but I think that is the limit of his experience and he does not really garden. Perhaps he is housebound and has a big grudge about it and this is the only way of widening his world. If some of you chose to give him the benefit of doubt then to you he is thegreatgardener, but he certainly ain't the greatforummember.
All,
I am closing this thread.
I try to run the forum with a light touch, it has so far worked with members self policing. I may have to revisit this approach.
