  just come from LIDL..banana shallots on sale  49p for 250 grams
  if planted would they grow?...know nowt about em..perhaps someone can help

Jim, are they selling them to eat or to plant??  I figure to cook with, in which case, yes they would grow, but I have a feeling they would flower rather than bulk up as they aren't sets.

They are a nice shallot though and because of their shape they are slightly easier to deal with in the kitchen.

One of the guys on our site planted banana shallots from the supermarket and they grew really well. He now saves them and plants them on each year. I have bought some banana shallot seeds and will see how I go with those.

So long as they are not pickled there is no reason for them not to grow. As for them going to seed thats no big deal. You would still get more shallots.

Personally I would not be tempted to plant them until Feb/Mar. For the price it is worth trying provided you do not care what the true variety  name is. Keep us all informed of progess.
