Title: To late for garlic?
Post by: PJW_Letchworth on December 05, 2008, 18:57:46
Have I left it too late to plant garlic?  I was ill for the last part of October and the majority of November so I haven't planted the garlic.  Come to think of it, I haven't sown the broad beans either.

Is it too late to plant the garlic?  More importantly, is it going to be too wet?  If it is too late, when should I be looking to plant it out?  Can it be started in trays then transplanted?

I don't think it is too late to plant but whether it is too wet only you can judge.

No. It depends totally on the weather. If the soil is workable get the garlic in. ASAP. If it is frozen you need to wait until it isn't. You could of course put fleece down and warm the soil to let you plant the garlic. Once it is in the soil it will cope with all the weather can throw at it. I still have some to plant too for similar reasons.

No, you should be fine getting it in now. You can wait til spring (but probably not a good idea if you have bought autumn planting garlic) but I've always found the best results come if they have overwintered.

I think it depends on the type of garlic - some flourish from spring others need overwintering. I'd plant it anytime rather than not at all.

I'm with you Grawc on that - planted some in late autumn but I just know it won't be enough. All down to available bedding space at the time. So I've still got some to plant next month, soil conditions being acceptable.

I've planted in Decmber and the crop's been fine. Some varieties can be planted as late as March.

We were late with everything this autumn cos we were away for a month. Didn't get anything in until November. All seems to be ok. Broad beans haven't shewn yet but theres still time. If not then we will have to put some more in in Spring
