Title: currant bushes
Post by: straush on December 02, 2008, 21:30:34
hi,  i have 2,  one red one blue currant bushes in pots.

i read it is the about now when i have to plant them in the ground.

i might move to within a year or two - far enough from current place that i will be forced to give up allotment.

will it be possible to dig them up and move them with me at that stage -  i really do not want to start over after having the plants for a few years

any idea ?

You could leave them in their pots as long as they are large enough then take them with you when you move. Or, plant them out now and in a year or 2 they will be well enough established for you to take cuttings when you move. The cuttings should start to produce fruit after the first year.

Hi. Any chance you could repot them into much bigger pots if you want to keep them? I tried to dig my currant bushes up after just 4yrs in the ground and the roots were deep, spread out and strong.. Fortunately for me I wanted rid of them :-\

I've dug up big bushes and moved them, it's not a problem. Just make sure you keep them well watered for the rest of the season after moving them.
