Title: Caterpillar ID needed please!
Post by: Common_Clay on December 02, 2008, 20:51:04
Hi,

I have a caterpillar that fell out of some roses that were grown and imported from Kenya. I tried doing a search online but I can't find what it is. Does anyone know? Is it a butterfly or a moth, and is it African?
It eats roses. The black markings are at its tail end.

  Thanks,

It looks like a young Hawk Moth caterpillar to me.

Thanks Georgie, but don't think it's that. Had a look on google and it doesn't look like any of the hawk moth caterpillars there. Should stress that those black markings are at its tail end and not its head. Anyone else have any idea what it is, or is this a new species to our planet?  ;)

Hawk moth was the first thing I thought of. If it's a Kenyan species it won't necessarily be online.

Hmm, strange, because when I type in 'hawk moth caterpillar' into google, and look for images, there is nothing that looks like this. The only pictures of ones that are brown have the black markings by the head, whereas this has no marking at its head but on its tail. The search continues.
