Eggs laid in autumn overwinter, and hatch into females. These then reproduce parthenogenetically (without mating), producing more females by live birth. If they become crowded, they produce winged females which fly off and start new colonies. In autumn, they produce both sexes. After mating, the females lay the overwintering eggs.
