Title: chickenweed
Post by: tig on August 25, 2004, 23:02:35
this weed which spreads like mad at my place and seems to carpet over everything including plants has always been known around our house as long as i can remember as chicken weed (is this what its called do u think) for such a weed that covers such a large area it seems to have a very fine almost non existent root formation  . just wondering if i have the right name for this (thing) :)

Otherwise known as Stellaria media. Has small white flowers in loose clusters, opposite ovate leaves and a single line of very fine hairs running down the stem.  Makes excellent green manure, and can be eaten in salads and sandwiches.

Best eaten as winter eggs - our hens love it & it makes the yolks nice & dark. As said already, though it's agood green manure (attractively priced, too).
