I'm looking at one of these for Ray for Christmas...anyone have a preference ?
I've had one a few years now, I prefer it to my friend's Garvin
Manic. My son reckons Tom Tom. Lorna bought herself a Garmin which she is very pleased with. The one my Grandson bought me is also a Garmin but I haven't tried it yet. I was quite impressed with Lorna's Garmin when she picked me up from Kent at the weekend. No good on technical side but I am sure someone will come along to give more advice.
I think mine's a tomtom 300, has bluetooth etc, gets me where I want to go, and that's all I need. Yes, Garmin not Garvin.
thanks, lorna..off to bed now so will catch up in the morning, we were on chicken duty this morning ;D
sorry, didn't see the rest of the replies..need my glasses ;D
xcuse me, but what is a tom tom?
:o :o
I can't believe you have just written that Carol!! ;D ;D
Satellite navigation for a car, hope that helps Carol ;)
You can end up paying a fortune for a sat-nav depending upon what and what you will actually use it for. If you want European maps on it then you will pay more again. We have a Garmin Nav 30 I believe and have only used it in UK. It has been an excellent Sat-Nav, simple and easy to use. We get free map updates for 1 year after which we would pay for any others. But for what they cost it would just be worth buying another sat-nav in 3-4 years time if that many new roads were ever built........ Funnily enough I read the article below yesterday no another website:
Sat-nav systems with extras
What you want is something that will tell you how to get from A to B without going round the houses. What you don't need is a sat-nav system with a built-in MP3 player, or the option to upload photos.
And as for upgrading to a widescreen version - forget it. Because let's face it, when you're driving there's time for little more than a cursory glance at the screen. So a bigger view, or a function to peruse photos of loved ones is a waste of money. Stick to paying for a simple sat-nav gadget that does all you need it to do.
sounds about right, kt..we borrowed one in summer ::)
kept losing us in cornwall, we were flying over fields on a bypass..it wasn't that new, they just hadn't updated it ;D
Stick with what you have got. The lady with the atlas or the Sat Nag as she is now known. ;D
How did you all manage before sat nav,
there were MAPBOOKS & ROAD SIGNS, always works for us!!!!!!! :P ;D ;D
I've had a TOM TOM 1 since day one does the job but don't totally rely on them they will get you into the poo-poo, you can pick one up for just under a£100.00 :)
There is a lane opposite my property ,it was blocked off years ago by a road going across the top of it.
I have lost count of the times I have been stopped by drivers trying to get to a local hotel.
There Sat Navs always send them up this cul de sac. :)

Horses for courses ::)
Delivery drivers can never find our house when using Sat Nav. Unfortunately we have the same Post Code of some houses on the other side of the main road and further up the village. The houses surrounding us have a completely different Post Code.
I give instructions when I order and tell them not to use Sat Nav but they all ignore me. ::)

Cornwall is one place you
DON'T need sat nav...If you miss one road turning, drive a mile or so down the road...hey presto your destination is sign posted again. No need for panic when in Corny ;D

we know it so well, we can find the places blindfold..it was for the novelty value and to see how it worked ;D
it's more as a 'toy' for ray, I'll still be planning and reading maps ;D
With you there Carol, thought we were going to talk about drums
and that someone had got a message, :-[

I usually plan the journey by using this site http://maps.live.com/ (http://maps.live.com/), then printing out the instructions BUT they are not always accurate, it missed an important left turn on one journey and I was cursing the fact I hadn't taken the sat nav on that occasion. the sat nav is useful for quickly glancing at the screen to see how far to the next exit, and the spoken instructions are OK too. But there is no substitution for common sense.
;D ;D ooo Sat Nav you mean. ;D OHs cars all come with that fitted. Honest never heard of Tom Tom. Despite having Sat Nav. I still sit with the map on my knee and follow each 'long' journey. Its one of my 'like doings'?? A road map would be with me on a Desert Island. ;D
