Does anyone know of a Turnip Preserve, Jam or Chutney recipe? I have a huge amount of Turnips (not Swede's) to be used up and was hoping to be able to make some form of preserve for Christmas presents... Cheap Christmas this year is the order of the day. I'm making plenty of other preserves etc. But I'd like to use up my turnips!
Any help appreciated!
Daniel
Make good compost or animal feed, I believe. Give me parsnips any time. A little in a stew may be OK. Moral of this is only grow things you like to eat. If you want to give me a Christmas present I would prefer a good looking Swede. I hate turnips.
LOL. I had the seeds, but didn't expect quite the glut! I'm looking for something that will last in jars really - but thanks. I'd love to have a Swede instead. Once dated a Danish girl :)
You can cut them into 2" dice and mix them with 1" diced beetroot, then pack into jars and cover with warm spiced vinegar. The turnips start to take on the red from the beetroot, only thing is they need to be left for about 2 months before eating. Also you can dice them up with other root veg and freeze them down as stew packs
I do that portsmouth30, just grow a few earlier in the year then dice up and freeze to use in whatever winter stew.
My favorite recipe for them is Split Pea and Mint soup which is really delic! just equal quantites of carrots, turnips, onions and split peas, the easiest of soups to make and one of the tastiest.
I use mine whenever i make a stew or casserole, but have to admit that my favorite is a nice hearty rabbit casserole
I think pigs like turnips ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
Spiced Vinegar and Beetroot it is :) Shame I used all of my home-grown beetroot up making chutney last weekend. Oh well ;)
I think I may experiment with these and see how we go.
Thanks all!
