Title: SMALL SEED BAGS
Post by: Nemesia on November 16, 2008, 17:49:05
One kind lady sent me some seeds recently and they were in a small plastic bag - just about 2.5inches tall. Where can I buy these? Does anyone know?
If I can get some I will be able to start offering my spare seeds. (I've tried making little packetsin the past and managed to get the seeds stuck to cellotape.)

If you mean the little ziplock bags, I don't know a free source (except when you get spare buttons on new clothes!) but you can buy 100 for around £1 on eBay.  The other type I use are little brown envelopes sold in stationers as wages envelopes.  I got my last lot in a big Tesco.

I got mine from eBay, they came with three white stripes on the front to write on and were very good value, and they sent me some sample sizes for free!

Thank you all. I will have a look on Ebay. It's amazing what can be bought on there.

Personally I would not use plastic bags to keep seeds as the plastic can sweat and affect the seed. I always use Paper envelopes for my seed. They can be bought at Partners they are 3 1/4" x4 1/4" in packs of 50.

I just keep my seeds in the packet I buy them in,  other than that, if I ever get round to being able to save seed from my crops I will remember not to use plastic bags.........  "Good thinking Batman" ;D ;D

I switched to plastic bags after the paper envelopes I had tried kept leaking seeds everywhere, and using sellotape to seal them was a pain. I haven't noticed any seed degradation or germination problems using the plastic ones, and they can be reused indefinitely, I use them like the Real Seeds peeps do, adding notes on a bit of paper inside the packet.

I got a big pack of 500 little bags last year, and got a sample pack of different sizes including the right size to take on planes free. Can't see me using them all up.......(Fib!) ;D

Thank you Barnowl, those look good.  On TV they always seem to use paper bags but that is for collecting fresh seed so I suppose it makes sense.

Re other suggestions,  I don't think plastic is a problem as long as the seed is very dry which  my saved ones are.  I only want bags to be able to offer seeds on here as, if I am not prepared, I will get in a flap. Therefore the seeds need to be put in their bags before I post the offer.  I will put them on my list for this weekend.
