Title: compost bin
Post by: mummybunny on November 15, 2008, 10:44:53
Hi all,

So excited have managed to pick up two compost bins free to collector woho. That will save me a few quid!

One has a pull up door in the front to collect the compost but the other one hasn't so was thinking i would start composting in the one that hasnt then when its time to turn it (if thats the right term) i can take from the top and place into the one that has!

Am i making sense? How often do you turn it?

Thanks lucy

I never bother but I have a lot of bins and they seem to rot down quickly so with only 2 then turning every couple of months should do it but then it depends on how quickly you fill it

mummybunny,
Are they 'darleks'?
They are difficult to turn. Best left to rot down/lift off to get at the compost. Do space the grass/veg. etc. with shredded paper to 'keep it sweet'.

I found doing it the other way better.

i.e. I can get the oldest stuff out of the door to put in the one without the door.

This way I am effectively 'turning' my compost in one move.

I've just written about this on my blog

http://fork-in-hell.blogspot.com/2008/11/my-compost-cake-showing-rotted-and-half.html

I just leave it to rot down for about a year and lift the whole bin off and take away the well rotted stuff putting the rest back in ... simple!  ;D

Hi all,

Sorry it has taken me a while to reply.

calendula:- not sure how long it will take to fill not composted before only time will tell. Cant wait to get started. Have to find them a good place to sit!!

telboy: - Yes they are 'darleks'. I'm not worried about a bit of hard work i like getting my hands dirty  ::)

glosterwomble: - What a great blog, very inspiring going to have a proper nosey later when i have more time  ;D

Tee Gee:  Your method of turning does sound a lot easier than my suggestion makes sense really. Thanks  ;)

Going to sort out where I'm going to put them this weekend collecting things in a bucket at the moment to help get me started. I have a great supply of shredded paper as i work for my dad in the office!

well thanks all for your great advice, I'm off to peel the carrots for tea saving the peelings of course  :P

If you put in a whole bucket most of it will run out of the bottom and go to waste. Just go in a bucket now and then as you fill it and dump the contents in.
