Title: Blueberry
Post by: grandadg on November 13, 2008, 19:34:10
Hello everyone.
I am a new boy to this site and have just taken over a small allotment in Rotherham S Yorks.
I would like to try growing some blueberries, does any one have any spare cuttings or seed?
If you have please let me know what you would like in exchange.
Any advise on suitable varieties for the area would be most welcome.

Never had much success with cuttings. Would recommend buying young plants, often find that the smaller garden centres have a couple of plants left that are from last year. These are often a good buy and fruit the following summer

Hello grandadg
Welcome to the site. I'm a new member too! Really enjoy looking through and reading tips etc.
I have 2 blueberry plants on my allotment, both un-named as I picked them up cheap, but both have fruited for the past 3 yrs, although not so well this year for some reason?
You should be able to pick some plants up if you look around and compare prices. But I would advise purchasing strong, potted-up plants.
Prepare the ground well and dig in plenty of ericacious compost or leaf mould as the plants like an acid soil. Don't apply any muck as they do not like this! I dug out two holes and lined them with black plastic before planting mine, as my soil is on the alkaline side. Each year I add ercacious mulch in the spring. Seems to work.
Good luck  Diggerdave

Hi and welcome to Diggerdave,

Thanks to every one for the tips and information. I have decided to wait until the local supermarkets get their spring stock as the local nurseries are some what over priced. Can't find any end of season bargains. In the mean time, I plan to prepare a suitable bed using some vintage leaf mould. Thanks again everone.
