Title: Keeping warm
Post by: caroline7758 on November 10, 2008, 11:23:12
I'm in the house on my own today and it's cold, but I hate putting the heating on just for me, it seems such a waste of money. To keep warm I'm doing the hoovering then I plan to go outside and divide some big plants. What does anyone else do to get warm for free?

Have a bowl of home made soup for lunch, that will warm up from inside.

I tend to wear a thick foam-padded gilet around the house.  Last Feb the boss was away for a week and the house temperature was only 5 deg C, but i felt quite warm.

Hoover, bake and clean, hot veg soup is another good one. Walking the dogs.......really appreciate how warm the house is without the heating on when I get back on a cold frosty day ;).

Wear lots of layers :D

some people manage cold better then others and some peoples houses are warmer than others.

Personaly i pop the heating on for an hour mid day and it keeps the house topped up from the morning burst. That said hot water bottles and blankets are always good if i cant be bothered to move and of course if the weathers bad curling back up in bed with a mug of tea and a movie is always good :)

I have 1 radiator on. It's the lead radiator that comes on when the hot water heats up. Keeps the whole house warm and dries my washing at the same time. It's much cheaper than using the tumble dryer!

When I'd had to go without heating,  I've let in the heating engineers, shown them the tea, etc., given them my cellphone no.....and buggad off to the nice warm pub with my newspaper until they've given me the Orl Clear to come back 8)

I don't 'do' cold, either :o

Ower Nora'd got the right idea 8) Those wrinkles in her lisle stockings trapped her body heat - bit of hot stuff, Nora, I believe? (not many people know that.)

we keep the house at about 15 degrees  :)

I suppose we are lucky, I don't think the house has ever dropped below 15 even with the heating off.

That would be too cold for me, I certainly would not be wasting my money heating it up to that. Warm your house right up then the ambient temperature will rise by storing it in the bricks and furnishings. I would have thought keeping it that cold is false economy. A bit like turning the immersion off instead of letting it tick over.

PS I relagged the attic last week with the £10 for 3 rolls deal they had at B&Q . Mainly because the bedrooms are too warm in the summer. Now the temperature of the house has definately risen a couple of degrees and the boiler has not cut in so much. I reckon on todays gas prices I will see a return on my £70 outlay before this winter is out.

Good job my house is warm. I was off work today because they wanted to change my meter. He said there is a leak and has plugged the inlet. I have to get a corgi plummer to find and fix it. No heat no cooking, good job we have the caravan on the drive with both in.

Every plummer I've called  was busy until tomorrow. Until I  played the disabled pensioner card.

3 hours later the pipe under the lounge floor has been exposed, I done it myself as the plumber was very busy and he will make a space in his schedule tomorrow to fix the leak.

Just time for a snifter, then I had better clear up the mess before she comes home.
