Title: Allotment border
Post by: Maidenheadtaff on November 09, 2008, 20:13:32
I'm considering putting a wooden border around my allotment. But apart from making my plot smarter as it certainly would do as it does with other plots i have seen are there any other benefits to putting a border down, as the wood will cost i guess 30 or 40 pound at least

Thanks
Rob

It defines a definitive boundary.  There can be no arguments over what you are responsible for maintaining.  You would also be less likely to have people walking onto it to help themselves to bits of veg from your plot.  It also stops most stray cats and dogs trampling your crops.

Hi Maidenheadtaff, I have a wooden border around my plot, luckily for me my mate who was sharing with me at the time brought a load of scaffold boards over to see what we could use them for and we decided to edge the plot with them and your right it does make it look tidier. We used some on the path side of my next plot neighbours Sid and woodchipped the path, after we had finished I noticed that the level of the earth looked a lot lower than before but I have nearly got the earth up to the level over the past three seasons, its like a giant raised bed but not if you know what I mean. One of the things I do when planting out a line is to bang a nail in either side and tie the line across. The wood also keeps  the weeds and grass at bay from the paths.  ;D ;D ;D
