" Watch this space"
Epic night, brand-new day 8)
Off to wearily sweep up leaves for a few hours....

And isn't it a beautiful day!
Rather curiously, there's very little on the BBC this morning about the Democratic policies and their implementation. I'd been looking forward to a keen analysis of the introduction of free healthcare, spreading the wealth, closing the environmentally unfriendly oil wells, and so on. But they seem to be obsessed with the man's complexion.
Bit ghey, if you ask me. ;D
what a shame his old gran didn't live to see it
Good for him!
Melbourne, I had BBC News 24 on this morning before work and they were covering quite a lof of his policies (around 8.15am)
RT, I agree.
Yes a real shame his gran couldn't see his victory. But can't you just see why so many have been seduced by this man? He comes over as not being a big-cheesy-punch-the-air-and-whip'em-all-up sort of bloke. I just watched his victory speech and am very impressed by his level voice and tone. I didn't think it was a speech designed to whip people's emotions into a frenzy - just to reaffirm what he hopes to achieve for them and for them all to unite as a Nation to achieve their desired futures. Very moving. My only hope for the future is that he is not forever referred to as "Barak Obama, The First Black President of the United States of America".......... Of course that is exactly what he is, but we all know that and he should now simply be addressed as Mr. President (or at least when he has been sworn in in January) as I am sure he was not voted in because he is black but because he is capable of being President. Time will tell eh?

10% tax relief on mortgage payments. I'd have some of that!
....I'm right behind you OllieC..........

Historical day..............good luck to him :)
Can't fault the guy for what he's achieved, but if things go t*ts up, I'd have more faith in Hillary Clinton as a leader in a crisis.
BTW, who is his number two? We've heard so much rubbish about Sarah Palin, but nothing ( that I've noticed) about her equivalent.
froglets - his name is Joe Biden.................yeah I know......"WHO?" ;D
twinkletoes
He's from Grannie Annie's neck of the woods, pardner
A good result - let's hope he lives up to expectations :) :) :)
Time will tell :-\
Feels a bit like 1997 just now...
we've had lots of black Presidents before, but only in the movies. Trouble is they always go on TV to say the world is doomed. the next time Obama goes on TV you half expect him to say we're going to be hit by an asteriod (Deep Impact), or whatever the thing was on 24 (2 black presidents in a row), can't remember what was up on The Fifth Element either (apart from the girl with funny hair and not many clothes), or the one nobody remembers - 2010 (war with Russia)

I was listening to Today on Radio 4 at that time. There seemed to be a lot of "well, he's got a big job to do", "first hundred days are critical", "difficult economic situation", and so on, but nothing of substance.
Exactly what do people expect him to do? We're not told. I suppose that if you don't set expectations, then you won't be criticised for not meeting them.
Don't expect anything - except a load of hot air. As it's always been and always will be.
What can one person do against the might of the uncontrollable financial world...
All these people he's going to 'help', does he mean by reducing income tax by 20 cents?
I'm so glad he won, I think it will be a breath of fresh air for everyone. He has a lot to do and a hell of a lot of mess to sort out, but I hope he will be the man for the job. Well done that man. :)
I'll second that posie :)
Think he's probably in a no-win situation, taking over the mess he has, but he's got to do better than Bush!
My American husband says thank god, he will no longer have to feel ashamed every time he opens his mouth... :-)
And thank god the credit crunch came just before the election, I say. Perfect timing to finally convince the USA public that 'trickle-down economics' is a dud.
I sat up all night to watch it was a moment in history lets just hope the other side dont block his changes 2 much.
I stayed up all night too and felt hugely uplifted and emotional, like so many of those participating on the spot - including some relatives of mine - obviously did. McCain's speech in defeat was extraordinarily generous and moving, I thought. Let's hope that negativity and defeatism don't set in once hard choices have to be made.
I suspect that McCain's an okay guy - it's that lunatic Palin who scares the hell outa me! His speech was perfect, and very humble.

Much as I applaud women who get involved in politics (something I don't think I could do) - that woman was just d**n scary! And very worrying :o
I agree. She's horrifying. I thought McCain was quite subtle in the way he referred to her contribution - something like "we will watch her career with interest". Damning with faint praise?
the first 14 pages of the Torygraph are about the US election, and then it starts up again from page 25. Enough, Already!
Well, here's a bit of reassurance for anyone afraid that America might be becoming a bigot free zone...

With all the gone mad pc in the world, will the name of The White House change?
I was watching GMTV yesterday and they were showing people celibrating, one black girl was shown phoning her gran and saying something along the lines of "we did it, we showed them". I wonder how many voted for him just because he was black?
Neil
I must admit that normally I am totally skeptical about politicians - my opinion is generally that you can't be successful and honest in politics, its too much of a cut throat business.
That said, I was moved by his speeches and emotions of the US crowds and I hope that he can make some positive changes (we are certainly in dire straits at the moment). It would be a first if he is not corrupted by power though!
Didn't they paint the whitehouse white because they couldn't afford another colour of paint or something like that? They're minted now, time for change!
