Title: Oca - anyone dug theirs up yet?
Post by: gwynleg on November 04, 2008, 19:25:44
I know there were one or two other people who planted these. The instructions said wait for a couple of weeks after they had been knocked down by frost before harvesting (which I have). Am thinking about digging this weekend but they dont look completely dead so could maybe leave them a bit..... Interested in what others are doing. I do hope they taste nice - havent tried them before.

If they are not completely dead do not touch them. The early frost was a real pain as they were only just starting to develop tubers. You need to be thinking of mid December if possible. Frustrating I know.

Mine looked completely dead so dug up a couple of plants - disappointing crop. Just in case they continue to grow I'll leave them a bit longer but I am not hopeful. Killer as I thought i could get a bumper crop this year.

The ones I ate this Sunday were good, but i think they may be a close relative to the Jerusalem artichoke than potato. I'll not eat so many at once next time.

Not dug mine yet, they are in the big greenhouse. The Sweet Potatoes were frosted (leaves) so they came out but the Oca still look healthy enough...  :-\

Thanks for all the answers - will check again today but if they look in any way alive, I will leave them. I have way too many potatoes at the moment anyway so dont need them yet!!
