Title: Why don't they make large enough pans?
Post by: tim on November 01, 2008, 09:24:41
Because you would not have room to store them?

This is 11 pints.

Catering pans are very expensive Tim.  If you need them for odd occasions (and have somewhere to store them!) you can sometimes pick them up at Army Surplus stores secondhand?  I know I have had to shop for them in the past and found this a good solution!

Like those that we were issued with in our first - & only married quarter, just 60 years ago. Rusty tin!

Actually, I've decided that I can now lift nothing heavier than our biggest ones. And they only just fit in the AGA.

try nisbets(http://www.nisbets.co.uk/default.asp) i get all my catering equipment from them and have been doing so for the past 18yrs, they do a range of aluminium pans from vogue and they are fantastic for the price, £34 for a 15lt alu pan

There you go, Tim!...large, affordable and stackable without the weight issue of cast iron? Think you could even tell Them Next Door to go forth and multiply again? Lots of food for lots more? ;) ;D

gosh I am surprised that folks have not learnt about the problems of cooking with aluminium - beware it is a real danger

so Tim, where did you learn to cook, I love the food you present here, never tire of imagining the flavours etc, always makes me feel hungry  ;D

I find the local Asian shops here in Derby can supply very large stainless steel pans that hold huge amounts, I bought two very large pans to do some party cooking in and found them the cheapest option. The pans are still going strong!

Yes - Nisbets I've used for some time.

Stainless? I keep wanting to upgrade our ally preserving pan but cost, & the fact that s/s is a poor  heater, have restrained me. It would be fine for large meals but too big for the AGA.

Now it's the weight+age that's doing it.

Ally? Has that not been debunked? Or was that a sales pitch?

Learning? In the olden days. When we had 'staff'! Cook, Shaddy (Mrs Shaddock), was very patient with a 7 year-old.. Then my American Grandmother was an ace cook. And all say that my Father should have been a Chef. He would have done better than he did elsewhere I'm sure. My Mother was no mean turn & loved it.

Now back to skimming the Irish Stew for tomorrow!!

PS No, Lolabelle - it's Scanpan. But heavy enough. Most others are SKK or similar.

It`s a vicious circle.

1-Find a pan large enough to simmer a goat-well make a shed load of stock in

2-Find a sieve/colander large enough to cover the large dishes you either have used or do not  have enough of

3-Hire a friend to hold one whilst you either hang on or mop up

4-Find fridge space to cool it all

5-Realise that one has not enough containers to put it in

6-And the freezer is full anyway ???

All of my pans are from Ikea, I swear by them, brilliant pans and lovely to use.
