   Thats brilliant Flighty,

Was Lab TECH for the sciences years ago - in a Comprehensive School,up to 6th form.

Had a Physics teacher that regularly sent his own scientific slides to Oxford Uni,
and he did very well out of it !

First identify and add details - as you have, about time and  place and anything else you
can give them  --  this was moons ago but sure they are still as anxious for the info
   and publication  ---  underlined !!

Wow thifasmom,   all this talent flying around [ I didn't mean the pun ! ]   :-[

Can you just make out the wings in movement  --  faintly?  or is it a mark on the leaf.

I can't beleive the markings on these guys , do you call that  iradecance on the fly [ spelling   :-\ ]

Are the first 2 pics  hover flies  and are they feeding on white fly ?

Well looking at it closely i think i can see the wing movement very faintly but i don't think my pic is clean enough to be certain :-\ :).

yes the marking are definitely lovely there were record numbers of hoverflies this year in my garden so i got lots of opportunities to study the different types and there markings but there were so many types i gave up on trying to identify them :-\.

yes this type of colouring on the fly is called iridescent (i used the spell check, make me look clever ;)).

the plant they were on were runnerbeans which were inundated with blackfly early in the season, i think they were hanging around for two main reasons:

   I'm absolutely gobsmacked !!

All these photographs are so beautiful and can't imagine the time and effort they must have taken,

Thank you so much thifasmom for answering all my questions, It's brilliant learning something
new every day  ---   never too old they say !

Flighty, that is lovely - so clear, didn't realise the  'stripes ' on the hoverfly were so stylish  --
    not just plain bands !!

Shall have great respect when I watch the hoverflies next summer,

Flossy thanks! It was a lucky shot and one that I hadn't really realised that I'd taken until I looked at them.  As you say the stripe detailing is amazing.  xx

Thanks, Sinbad,
The shots above were taken with a Sony Alpha 100 DSLR.
Lenses used came from my older Minolta Dynax 35mm film cam. I went for the Sony due to being able to swap lenses.
