Title: Overwintering onions
Post by: Flunky on October 28, 2008, 09:17:09
I have ordered "Shakespear" and "Senshyu".

They are going to go into my onion bed. I have some organic manure which is about 2-3 years old and would like to use this before planting.

If it is dug in WELL do you think it would be a problem to put sets in straight away ?

Also, is there any other tips you guys could give on growing onions ? The ones I put in, in the summer were a wash out. Very small.

As per usual many thanks in advance.

F.

I did read somewhere that onion fly is more prevalent on freshly prepared soil so if possible best to treat as a stale seed bed and plant some 10-14 days after preparation. Has anyone tested this theory? cause I had a real problem with onion fly this year and would prefer not to have to cover if poss.

Onion fly affects plants from seed more than from sets.
