now that the cold weather is starting to close in fast i change the perch in the coop i put an 2 lenthes of 8 foot by 1foot ply and make a v i fill this with straw it allows the girls to nest up at night and stops the feet from getting frost bite
That sounds a good idea. :)
Shaun - I am being thick here - but how does it work? Do you still use the perch or are they cuddled in the straw?
I worry about my single one at home as she hasn't got any other heat apart from her own body! She tends to sleep in a nesting box so maybe I will have to give her a thicker hay bed.
Old Bird ???
I've just piled lots of shredded paper in our shed, they do go up to the top roosts now so it mops up as well as keeping them snug ;D

i take the roosting perch out , and as i said b4 i make a v out of ply and pack it with straw when i go in to the coop in the morning they are all cuddled up in a line they bury themselves in it so i think they prefer it. the reason i do it is that i went in to the coop and they where all squabbling to get in the nest boxes its just to make them more comfortable i also give them extra food in winter mainly corn has this helps them get through the night and i put multi vitamins and iron in the water
