Looking to compare financial differences for the year 1963 and today. Anyone got a link to such a site?
(Petrol was about 2/6d a gallon in 1963)
Are there specific items you want to find ? as I think you are unlikely to general list. Perhaps looking in some old newspapers in the library.
The best I can think of is the Revenues Indexation chart for Capital Gains (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/RATES/cgt.htm). but this only goes back to 1982. It allows you discount today's valuation to take inflation in to account on long held assets.

Yes, and my wages were £5 a week!!
I beat you Pauline. By 1963 I was on the dizzy sum of 6 guineas!
In the 1960's my dad had a low wage job on building sites and
my mum stay at home until I was 8, then she did part time factory work.
They were able to get a mortgage on a 3 bed terrace house in London which they managed pay off in 20 years.
Every year we had a camping or caravaning holiday.
By 1967 they paid CASH for a new Ford Escort.
There only debt was the house. They also had small savings for a rainy days.
No child benefit as a only child. No tax credits(apart from married persons allowance) or rate rebates.
Everybody could access dental treatment.
Family baths were once a week
No central heating and I don't remember anyboby complaining of being cold.
Now teachers have trouble getting a mortgage!

That's a good link, Hopalong. Thanks.
My £6 6s a week in 1963 looks like this now.
In 2007, £6 6s 0d from 1963 was worth:
£95.02 using the retail price index
£97.81 using the GDP deflator
£211.11 using the average earnings
£252.08 using the per capita GDP
£286.63 using the share of GDP

Of course you would have received more than me in those days because you are a man!!
That discrimination still crops up today.
Blimey Didn't know how well off I was. When I packed up my job in London in July 1960 (waiting for my first born) I was earning £13.10s.0d. My salary was more than Charlie's basic of £12per week.
In 1972 when we bought a filling station/garage in the Fens our 4* petrol was 32p per gallon.
can,t remember my earnings in 63 but I started work at 15 in a factory in 62 and I received £3 1s 9p for a 40 hour week! I gave 30bob to my mum for my keep and the rest was all mine to spend. used to save up for a few weeks and then go to the bargain basement at C and A

Didn't men do a better job though? (he said, ducking behind the couch!)...
Oh boy Ollie.. I hope that sofa is bullet proof :o
Ken - thank you for raising this question - oft asked.
And thank you Hopalong for that link.
I was overpaid as a Fighter Pilot at 10/- a day.
I was about 18 months.... ::) I remember my Dad brought home £10 in 1970 for a eight hour shift 5 days a week and Saturday mornings.
???
I was -12 at the time!
Intersting how the different indices give such huge variation...

In comparing, don't forget that we have 6 more noughts in a Trillion than the US.
I'm hoping this particular thread stays within the bounderies of 'commerce' but I feel a thread concerning reminiscences looming!
(Anyone want to start that one off?) :D
Yeah! OK! I will!
