What kind of stuff should I be planting now and when should I expect to harvest it. (see I am a novice!!!)
Not very much but you can have a look in here for some ideas;

we're growing garlic, winter onions, if your soil's okay..winter lettuce, with a bit of protection..broad beans soon, shallots, eric on our site says on the longest? day, mouli radish, again with some protection..happy growing ;D
Thanks for the advice. I think I am going to try onion and garlic. May leave the lettuce until I get a bit more experience.
cheers
:)
Hello and welcome to A4A Thenovice, onions and garlic are a good start. You can also plant fruit trees and bushes while they are dormant as bareroots.
Its a good time of year to look through catalogues and plan for next spring..........THEN you will be so busy :D.
Try getting some raspberry canes in now too and you will have a great crop next summer. Joan J is an excellent variety.
Start off under cloches and you could try:
Winter hardy spring onions:

Lettuce 'Arctic King' or 'Valdor'

and thinking ahead to next year, so you have something to harvest this time of year, endives and winter cauli (purple cape!!) and Winter radish, which is "hot" if grated onto salads, but otherwise like turnip/swede if boiled...
oh, and welcome to the site.... ;D
