Title: RED PHONE BOX
Post by: betula on October 27, 2008, 08:41:24
BT are phasing them out.

Councils have the option to keep them. For a price.

Would you miss yours.??

Some argue they are iconic, very much part of the landscape.

Apparently you can even keep the box minus the phone.

I like to see them.

When did you last use a phone box anyway? There's one at the bottom of our street & it appears to act as a yoof magnet at night...

i saw one the other day in someones garden looking like it needed refurbishment. its a shame they are being phased out.

the last time i used one was last year when my phone died on me while out shopping. there are also a couple on my street which the yobs think are for target practice ::).

Yes anything like that can cause a problem for some.my son had one outside his house and successfully campaigned to get it removed. It took him a couple of years but he is very tenacious.

When I was going out with my husband he used to go into the phone box outside where I worked and ring me and blow kisses to me at the same time.
I used to have to pretend he was a customer. My boss never caught on.

So romantic. :)

why is it when every kid has a mobile phone, that they still hang around phone boxes to deal drugs? Perhaps the youth of today have a more developed sense of traditions than we give them credit for

When I was growing up in the sixties we used to hang around the outdoor.
We were soooo cool 8)

I like to see steam trains - spect I still can on certain stretches of line (Severn Valley is nearest to me) but time moves on.....

Even as an 'iconic' symbol they've got glass panes - lovely to smash, innit.....they're a useful urinal, whatever (and I really really really don't want to detail the 'whatever' ::)) and the last time I really needed a phone and didn't have a cellphone with me - I Mugged a Grannie for the use of hers 8)

Nah, times, things,  have moved on and their use now is obsolete?

Nice that they're still captured on film, tho......"look grandkiddy! there's the place I used the mirror to put my white lipstick on when I was 13 and going out "to do my homework" on a Sunday afternoon at a friend's house....

Is that arty thing made out of red phone boxes still in Kingston-on-Thames high street ?

I remember them building it 20 odd years ago, when the red boxes started to be phased out.

It was my uncle who insisted on it's purchase! He was the counsellor at the time. Kinda cool for a Tory, I thought.

What a grat claim to fame (for your uncle!) Kingston is my nearest shopping centre (I was there only Sunday proving there is no credit crunch!) and I love the phone boxes. That's about the only use for them these days though and I can't say I'll be sorry to see them become extinct. Mobiles are so much more hygenic - as long as you remember to keep them charged!

I have a friend who is of Gypsy origin and he loves "old" things. He has quite an impressive entrance to his bungalow (sweeping walls). He purchased a red phone box and a red post box. People actually posted letters in it :) so he had to block it.

I see that the Post Office are bringing out a 'British Design Classics' stamp set next week (13th Jan).

The Red Phone Box being one of them.

The sculpture in Kingston is called Out of Order.  I'm a frequent passer-by as it's right outside Wilko's.  I think it's loved and loathed in equal measure!

In my misspent ' yoof ', we used to put our pennies in the old phones, when connected -

shout down the mouthpiece and hold a conversation with our mates, then get our money

back.  anyone else use this cunning plan ?
