Title: Seed Audit
Post by: saddad on October 25, 2008, 23:01:29
Sat down this evening to check what we had.... several hours later...
We have 33 tomato varieties etc... (we culled two!) squash, peppers, courgettes.. and all the usual stuff. Six shoeboxes full and a whole set of peas and bean jars...
and were still able to make a reasonable list of what we needed!!  ::)

I have just totted up the cost for seeds I want for next year.  £120 including spuds and compost and feeds.  I have about £40 of seeds at home.

Did an on-line order last week of seeds and it came to £60, but still got to buy seed potatoes, beens and peas.  I also expect that I will have to buy other seends.

Is there a "help" service for uncontrollable seed purchasing?  ::)  What is it about ordering more of the seeds we already have in our boxes?  It has got to be the opening of the new packet or something.   ???I have not ordered any new seed yet - I am going to try really really hard to sort out my boxes first then hit the "pay now" button............. ;D ;D
Oops I lie - I have ordered and received 6 various squash seeds last week  ::) ::) ::)

Chillies and tomatoes are the  principal cause of my downfall (50+ tomato and 100+ Chilli) - there are 27 chilli I've yet to try growing (mostly bought this autumn) and 13 Tomatoes. But once your inhibitions have broken, the illness takes in other plants as well - courgettes beans, the list goes on. As I only have room for about 40 chilli plants and 30 tomatoes this presents a bit of a quandary, although I have decided on several varieties that I won't grow again, there are so many with which I don't want to part.

I too blame the internet. When I could only get seed from garden centres, choice was limited - an Apache and Jalapeno here, a Cayenne and Georgia Flame there; it was harmless fun. Now you can buy from all over the world -even direct from Numex. Who can resist?

I hope the fact that next year I won't even get close to being able to grow everything I've bought  will help bring me to my senses.... ???

I've been on the plants of distinction website, I've filled in the order form..but, I haven't paid...yet..I've found a cabbage I would like to try, filderkraut, trouble is, there are 400 seeds in a pack..considering we would only grow half a dozen of them, plus losses, it would take at least 20 years or more to use them..I can't make my mind up whether to go for it or not  ;D
anyone found this variety in a smaller pack ?

It can be done!!! - I was ruthless and got my seed order down to £8 for next year. I used to order £20 -30 worth and then waste loads of seeds.

Well since my OH lost his job and had to take a much less paying one i have had to really tighten my belt re: seed buying (i can't really justify it at the moment).

so two days ago i went through my collection properly and took out what i don't like and what i can't seem to grow and made two piles one for swapping and one for possible discarding ie: seed bombing ;). i also found lots of duplicated packets etc :-[.

so the situation at the moment is, what i don't get via seed swaps i don't grow but really found after my sorting that i have practically everything i would like to grow bar a few that i used up this year, there are a few new varieties i would like to grow and these i hope to get through swaps. so i would only have to buy seed potatoes, onion sets and garlic bulbs which should not put me out of pocket.

but i so miss splurging on seeds at this time of the year :'( :'( :'(.

Seeds from inside peppers
ditto chillis

two cobs from this years sweet corn  (grown from last years)

dried beans from this years which got too big to eat

ditto peas.

Cost a few sheets of kitchen paper and a few brown paper envelopes.

Will get sprouting spuds from the supermarket and seeds from aldi, liddl or netto next spring. If I haven't got enough from last years to get me through. (probably have).

When i had to give my lottie up due to ill health i gave most of my seeds away !!
I then got well and took on lottie again, now im overflowing with seeds !!!!
Most of my new seed came from Wyvale when they where 50p, we get 50% off T & M seeds so my flower seeds came from there, and i won a voucher for Keith Fosters show seeds worth £30 and i spent that and now i have so many seeds even im embarrassed 8)
But as i pointed out to my hubby i don't buy clothes and shoes unless i need them, i don't drink or smoke and we very rarely go out so seeds are my shoe's ;D
And yes i do know where they all are and i can remember what i have (mostly).
Seed is nice to share  :)

..small cough cough here as I have not bought 1 seed packet!! but.......................

my collection of 281 squash varieties  and 398 tomatoes are ready to leave home..not sure about the beans but  3 figures anyway...then all the other stuff  with many  multiple varieties, adds up to enough to last a few lifetimes!!

All out of their chiller now, so I hope they travel well. We will probably get a blooming heat wave during the 4 months they will be packed.

I must say I am having withdrawal symptoms every time I read the catalogues as they drop in the door and I am very envious of you all.

Happy shopping.

Well, I guess there are some advantages to being without a greenhouse!  Even with the allotment I manage to keep everything to two biscuit tins.  Not infected by the tomato/chilli "pay now" finger (he he ;D) as I only grow 6 chilli plants and two growbags of tomatoes each year!  Bit annoyed with the chillies this year though as they are mixed seed so I've no idea what varieties they are!

Peas we mostly use up as we plant and eat loads at the lottie!  Must get another large packet of Kelvedon Wonder for next year  ;).  Beans I do seem to be collecting as I end up with a lot of half packets!  Same with carrots and lettuce/leaves.

Oriental veg and herbs are a bit of a downfall as I keep wanting to try new ones.  As for the squash ... I think this is my biggest weakness as I have 6 varieties to try next year as well as green and yellow courgettes.  I just know I will run out of space for them >:(

This year was my first full year at the lottie and I figure I planted too many spuds and not enough onions, so I'll try to rectify that next year too.

I have also weakened to getting some flower seeds .... hopefully I'll manage to juggle them on the windowsills in spring! ;D ;D

Happy moving Jeannine - hope all your seeds settle in well and blossom (eventually) in their new home!

Hi Jeannine.

How do you decide which ones to grow each year? I've only room for around 30 and it's a terrible struggle deciding  :)

Pippy,

If you post some pics of the chillis on Chilllis Ahoy (under the Edible Plants forum) we can all have fun guessing the varieties!

Sadly I've picked and strung the chillis for drying now, but it was fun watching them develop and figuring out the types, if not the names of varieties.  One grew into big long green peppers which were no at all hot - very like ramero peppers but I couldn't get them to go red.

Then two were quite big ox horn types, started pale green and went red.  The last to develop were some medium sized, dimpled ones which half of them went red, and one last plant which was more of a birds eye chilli type.

Altogether about 30 chillis - some used straight away and some drying on strings.  I've worked out over the last few years thats enough for us and as many as I can find the time and space to grow!

I'll be using the same seeds next year as there were lots left in the packet - who knows what I''ll get then?   :D
