ANY USE FOR SHREDDED

Funnily enough you should ask this. I read an article in one of my lottie books two days ago. It said to place shredded paper around the base of brassica plants. When they get watered, it prevents the water evaporating as quick by being absorbed in the paper and the paper retaining the moisture in the ground. Never used it for brassicas myself. You could also put some in your compost bin, use it as a pet bedding for certain animals.
When I dig the potato trench, I line the bottom with shredded paper then cover with manure before sitting the spuds on it, then backfill with the soil to make the mound. The paper acts as a sponge and retains the water and moisture so they need less watering. Some people also use it as a mulch in certain areas such as in the greenhouse.
Always use it Jim in the 'Darleks'. In between layers of grass or plant leaves. Saves turning the compost, always smells sweet (unless I've piddled in it!)
;D
I use it in small quantities in my wormery as well as compost heaps. It seems to rot down very well and stops grass etc. from compacting and getting smelly. Also put newspaper (not shredded) in the bottom of my bean trenches to retain moisture.
we compost lots, use it for chicken bedding and earth up the spuds with grass clippings on top, after the soil has reached a point we couldn't get any more on ;D
This is more a question than a suggestion, but if you've got a lot of the stuff, would it be useful as a mulch for strawberries, as opposed to straw?

WHY DID JOE SWIFT FROM GR WORLD PUT EGG SHELLS IN THE PLANTING HOLES OF HIS CAULYS
JIM THE WORZ
Slugs do not like egg shells, but they would not help a lot if they were in the planting hole. I used to put rhubarb cubes in the planting holes of brassicas as I was told it helped keep clubroot away. I seemed to have more success than the neighbouring plots.
Shredded paper? Log blocks?
I use it to mulch around plants in the greenhouse.
At the end of the season, it goes in the compost.
I did wonder about putting it on the raised beds outside, but I am a bit worried that the wind would spread it every where.

I really don't know what you are shouting about, but you really are becoming an arrogant pain in the arse.
valmarg
I put it in my runner bean trench and my compost bin.
Jim,
capitals are shouting ;)

I use shredded paper in my compost bin, the worms seemed to like it! Put it in about 3 months ago and not a trace left. :)

Ive been using the Rhubarb trick for the last two seasons and i must say it does seem to help, not as a cure but my brassicas seem less affected by it.
On really cold days i stuff shredded papper down me wellies as i cannot be doing with cold feet. :)
I compost it too! :)
I use shredded paper under the perches in my chicken shed then cover it with straw.
My worms in the wormery like it, and it calms the fruit flies down. Also use it in the compost.
Mixed in bean trenches and added to compost bins when they are very wet. ;D ;D ;D
I don't shred all my papper i leave some whole and hang it up in me shed next to a black bucket ::)....well ya never know :-X :-[
;D ;D ;)
Hi
I always use shredding paper on my compost bay and I use it to put at the bottom of the runner beans trench. It is so good and so cheap to use.
Deryck
this topic has broadened my uses for shredded paper, i have only ever used it in the compost heap in layers with grass clippings when i have mowed the lawn. but this year i want to dig some bean trenches for the greedier crops and so will follow on with the advice of adding it to the trenches for nutrients and moisture retention.
I used it as a mulch for my strawberries this year. Did it at the start of the season then replaced it mid-season with some fresh. Worked a treat.

I'm thinking the same thing, I live near the sea and garden on an exposed site so can imagine all my neighbours plots covered with my shredded paper :-[ :-[ :-[ - but I guess you will either have to water it and or weigh it down.
But as thifasmom said it's broadend my ideas too - like the idea of using it in the spud beds.
Thanks

Thanks Amazin, I had wondered about this, and shall use it in future.
Thanks again

My wormery will get a layer tonight in expectation of frost - a sort of duvet for worms :)
Fantastic for providing bulk and fibre to mix with the high nitrogen stuff like grass cuttings in the dalek :) :)
Well i was going to freecycle it for pet bedding but now i know all this i think i will save the 4 black bin bags i have just shredded. Thanks guys what a mine of information you all are
Can I just clarify this, I can put shredded paper and cardboard in my composter correct ?

Guess they contaion trace minerals that help the caulys, only a guess.
And yes, I also put shredded paper in my darlek.
just be careful not to put much shredded paper in the compost or it will slow composting process.
I see I am already too late to answer.
We can not get enough of it for all sorts of things from bon fire starting, using instead of straw for the strawberries etc, mixed with grass cuttings for mulching, it can even be buried straight into a shallow ditch to rot down in the ground. Adding to compost. It is all vegetable matter and inks/dyes and such are all supposed to be biodegradable these days.
In fact, I am wondering if I go round and steal from those bags put out for waste paper collection I would be breaking some law and I feel certain I probably will be.
I am just amazed Jim did not know it's value.
We get so much junk mail that I now sort it. That with names and addresses is put in a sack for shredding or burning. That with no name or to the householder gets recycled in to the nearest PO pillarbox, perhaps they will get the message that we don't want it.
yeah i've had to get my hubby to get a load from work because my compost was so wet! seems to have done the trick!

Good to hear I'm not alone in doing that ;D They clutter up my hallway I'll clutter up their post boxes :-X
Crushed egg shells certainly help with slugs and are a form of bone meal, I've always been lead to believe...
Ace rhubarb chunks - clubroot...werks for me...... ;)
Shredded paper as said above, in compost, bean trenches under tatties ect...
a great supply of humous on the plot and helps retain water...
Have a good season one and all.... ;)

Lol, I bet all that happens is they tip the post bags into the sorting machine and some other poor sod recieves the junk mail.
No joke Here
I once worked for a company who used to send Junk mail out.
They had tons of it returned.
If they were busy, it all went in the bin.
If they were not busy, they would get staff to process it as 'remove from mailing'
That meant that any returned mail got taken off the mailing list.
Sadly the GPO would wrongly send that company mail, meant for another address.
Usually it got dumped.
bump
this time last year i asked at my college if they had any shredded paper, and got given about 6 MASSIVE bags of it,thank you for reminding me to ask for more. if i hadnt taken it,it would have gone to landfill, and those 6 bags were just one days worth, terrifying isnt it.
