Title: blood and bone
Post by: cambourne7 on October 24, 2008, 02:30:53
Hi

MIL gave me a large box of blood and bone for the lotty, i usualy only use bonemeal so not sure what this would be good for??

I have garlic, onions and peas to go in this week and maybe if i have time some cabbage.

Was going to dig over beds and cover with cardboard to supress weeds with black plastic on the few that i will be planting early these will have leaf mold dug in to help the soil before covering.

What would you advice i use this stuff for??

Cam

I use BFB (blood, fish and bone). It is a balanced fertiliser (roughly equal quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash).

However, I would not be using it at this time of year as it will only encourage soft growth which will make plants more susceptible to any adverse winter weather.

Use it in the spring, eg just before sowing.

Subject of balanced fertilisers discussed before ...

Blood is a fast acting nitrogenous fertiliser, so only use it when the plants are growing actively.

Blood would probably work, but it's a lot more expensive than pee.

Fish Blood and bone is the organic equivalent to Growmore.

Sodium chlorate?? What are you trying to do, poison everyone's crops? Garotta probably works, but you need nitrogen to accelerate compost, and what's the point paying for something you produce naturally?
