I have them growing in my greenhouse Yuet and I think you know the fruit are ripe when the papery lantern coverings become very dry and tissue paper like.  The fruit inside should be orange and slightly soft to the squeeze.  I grow mine from new every year.  I don't know if they come back year after year.

hi yuet,
i am growing cape gooseberry for the first time this year, and I've got mine outside in the ground. They have flowers on, and also fruits are forming. agree with other postings that the 'shell' will go papery and you will see the fruit as orangey inside the shell.
I understand they are not frost tolerant, but do not know whether if kept or bought inside would come up again next year. I shall be growing mine new from seed next year, as I've found that it isn't expensive (Mr fothergill's supplied mine, 99p i think). Next year i will grow some inside and some outside to see if it makes a difference in the amount of fruit.
