Title: Who is doing what, where and with who at Christmas
Post by: Jeannine on October 21, 2008, 21:21:28
So what are you all planning.

John and I have just booked the ferry to go to Hiolland to spend Christmas and New Year with my son and family..and to meet our new grand daughter who will be 10 months when we get there.Arriving there on Christmas Eve morning.

By request, I shall be taking , (then cooking) a typical English Christmas dinner probably Turkey and Ham,  then  something for New Year too, probably a prime rib with all the trimmings including Yorkshires. They have promised to feed me on all the other days!!

Ideas welcome for typical British bits and pieces , especially ideas for New Year. They have friends joining us so don't want to miss anything out.

So what are you all cooking or eating? Or where are you going?

Staying home - have mum arriving a few days before and staying for a week - she will be parked in her favourite arm chair and kept in hot and cold gin and tonics starting Christmas Eve.  Nobody else coming - hoorah, so can have our first ever totally relaxed Christmas Day.  Rib of beef has been requested for dinner.

Boxing Day at Ava's parents, day after that at my sisters - so Christmas dinner 3 days in a row!!

Will have 2 sons at home, so will be having usual christmas celebrations at home. Pressies in the morning. Church for morning service. Big christmas dinner, then a walk afterwards. Nice quiet evening  playing a board game. Masterpiece is a general favourite with everyone.

I will be cooking a vegetarian wellington (not boot!)  but my Mum will be sending some turkey over for non veggie son to have with his dinner.

Mum in law has baked us a lovely christmas cake, un-iced, as I am the only one who eats icing, and I know I wont be able to resist it. I'll make some vegan chocolate brownies, so everyone can have some.

Other than that, nothing special. Just the usual meals. I am getting older and wiser when it comes to slaving away in the kitchen on special occasions. Who knows, may even get a son to cook for me one day over the holls. On the other hand.....

cj :)

When Charlie was alive the family would come to us each boxing day. I now usually have Christmas day and Boxing day dinners next door with Lorna.  Christmas Eve or Boxing day tea at Alysons and a meal at son Johns. They sort it between them and then tell me where I will be :). So for the past 5 years I haven't had to cook but I do help with preparing, washing up etc. Josh is told he can't knock on the wall until 7am
he likes me to see him open his presents. Last year 10minutes after the 7am knock he phoned and said "Are you coming?" Well yes I am but I do have to shower and dress!!!!!

We will have Christmas day and Boxing day at home with our son who lives with us, then on 27th, hubby and I will be taking the caravan to Looe in Cornwall for a week.  My other son and family go up to Durham for their celebrations so hopefully they will come to us to celebrate the New Year on 3rd or 4th January.

Ignoring it all and complaining that our regular telly schedule is all up the spout and getting grumpy at the numpties who seem to be shopping to feed the 5,000 for a year when the shops will be open again in two days & lots of it will either get wasted or eaten to then be complained about making them fat & having to go on a diet in the new year.

rant over

Well after feeding 12 last year (ok 14 if you count the HUGE dinner the springies had), this year it's just me and the two boys (and the springies), so looking forward to a much smaller, but probably not quieter affair!  My best friend is working in a young persons safehouse on Christmas day so will probably put a dinner up for her to have when she gets five minutes.  No doubt it will be a mad round of visits in the morning followed by lots of rubbish telly and even worse Christmas Cracker jokes!

And today, I make a desperate plea to all those who buy Christmas Crackers - please, please, please spare a thought for the poor people who have to make them - I did it for one year and for each box of crackers, we received about 2 - 5% of what they sell them for!!!  I have done some sucky jobs in my time but THAT was most definitely the worst!!! rofl  ;D

Jeannine - I've spent new Year in Holland a few times and have always had a great time. Seeing as your doing an essentially British Xmas dinner why not go for a Dutch New Year and check out what food they typically have. All I can really remember of my previous NY's in Holland was that everyone seemed to have parties with friends and families and then on the strike of 12 they would go out of their house and let off loads of foreworks. Great fun and happy memories!
