Post by: cacran on October 20, 2008, 21:50:51
When do I have to pick the apples from the tree. I have cupped them in my hand and given them s slight twist but they have not come loose. I was told to do that. they look a bit scabby though!!!! ???

It depends on the variety of apple tree as to the harvest time.  We have just taken all the apples off our tree and they are now in storage,  less those in the fruit bowl. 8)

Depends, yes. Our Braeburn will stay till November.

We lift rather than twist for test. Problem is that ripening is not even - wind can knock off a large number before others are ready. We've had that a lot this year with Sunset. But many are still hanging on.

Better, though, to be a week or so early than have them fall & not store.

They vary widely. Keep trying, and don't forget that some will come off easily before they're really ripe, and the first to fall will need to be stored for a couple of weeks before you eat them. It's a case of try it and see.
