This came from a pack of mixed salad leaves.. we've been eating leaves all summer which have a pleasantly bland taste, but now I have a large root-ish veg. Is it some sort of turnip? Or radish, possibly..

possibly a radish not sure of the type, maybe someone will be more specific.
It looks like what is known here in France as "white radish". You can eat it raw, grated - or cook it like turnip. Not one of my favourites - too bland in flavour for me!
Looks like mooli to me, which is a kind of radish:

Ooh, thanks - I think we have a winner! I found a photo of mooli/daikon here, and the leaves look very similar: http://www.diseaseproof.com/Daikon.JPG
It's been pretty indestrictible in terms of slugs/snails/beasties, so I'll be pleased if it's at all tasty. :)
Nobody seems to describe it as particularly tasty, rather as somewhat bland (I'm not sure I've ever eaten it, but you always see it in Asian grocery shops) - but it seems that you can use it grated like carrot, in salads; the top recipe that comes up on a search is 'mooli paratha'.
we use it like water chestnut, sliced and stir fried , always grow them, got some in the poly now
definately mooli-dunno about bland-ours are nice and peppery-sliced and stirfried-grated in coleslaw, grated on top of salads-mine are in the polytunnel!-yum!

The Japanese do loads with them such as marinade strips of them and use them to tie sushi together.
