Title: Best Year ever for Toms and Peppers despite the weather ??
Post by: vegmandan on October 17, 2008, 00:14:19
Despite this year being the worst I can remember for sunshine I have had my best Tomatoes and Peppers ever in over ten years.

I have no idea why, as these generally require a good sunny Summer.

All I can put it down to is that for the first time this year I planted both in compost with added John Innes.

I used Westland multipurpose with added John Innes from Homebase.

Crazy I know but it must have made the difference. ;)

Anyway here are a couple of pics which I wouldn't have imagined could be true given the hideous Summer this year.

Dan. ;D

well done, i grew both types outside and though they did well the peppers never properly ripened and the toms started to ripen late, but I'm still picking toms now :), which is a nice bonus.

may i ask whats the reflective thing behind the toms, is it to insulate or to reflect light or is it for both ???

I grow my Toms in a sort of lean-to with no windows :o which has just a roof light so I put some of those shiny exposure blankets behind them to try to maximise what little light I do get by reflecting the light back.

A bit like if you grow seedlings on a windowsill and put some tin foil behind the pots, instead of them just getting light from the one direction they get the reflected light also and grow upright instead of leaning over. ;)

It seemed to work  ;D
