Title: Strawberry seeds
Post by: Paulines7 on October 12, 2008, 16:53:56
I have some strawberries which I bought from the local market and they are really delicious.  I want to take the seeds and try growing some but was unsure how to do this.  Getting the seeds off the fruit is not easy so should I press one in some paper towel and leave it until it dries out?  I am also wondering when and where I should sow them.  Could I put them on a windowsill in a pot of compost now or wait until the Spring when I have my toms, cues etc on the go?

Your advice is much appreciated please.

To collect the seeds, yes squish the fruits and place the seeds on kitchen paper to dry out.

OH has done this earlier this year, and he intends to sow them in the Spring.

The only proviso I would have with 'shop-bought' strawberries is that they may be an F1 variety, and would not come true to type.  But, hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. ;D

Valmarg, many thanks for your reply.  I will sow them in the Spring and keep my fingers crossed that they are not an F1 variety.  They have no label on the punnet so may have been grown locally.   Next time I am at the market in Wilton I will ask the stall holder if he knows the variety.

If you have a scalpel, cut thin slices of the skin (with seeds on) and place it wet side down on a bit of waste cloth or bounty kitchen towel (don't use the stuff that falls apart when wet).
When dry just scratch the the seeds off.
