showed Joe, planting onions, the chap was showing him a different way to do this which looked good. The onions he recomended were called "RADAR"
My question is is it to early i thought they were planted in spring ???
would they rot during the wet winter? . I have never grown them before & wanted to try but WHEN ?.

Over-wintering onions (and shallots) go in now. I was having a look round yesterday - lots of places online have them (Radar included) or your local garden centre may have them but perhaps no choice in variety. I think Radar might be on eBay too.
we did radar last winter, most of them bolted, maybe you'll have better luck :)
Most of my alliums go in now; overwintering onions, garlic, elephant garlic and walking onions. I've never had any luck with shallots. the only exceptions are the spring-planted onions, and spring onions (which are obviously eaten at an immature stage; if I have any sets left over, I use those).
I put in some Radar from the Organic Gardening catalogue in the normal way about 10 days ago, and after seeing the programme I made the ridges as per the chappie on GW and put some Red Cross from Marshalls in. We shall see how they do.
The ridges run north to south, so hopefully they'll pick up the best of the sunshine.

Have tyred the ridge thing before,i found that the winter rain will wash away some of the soil from around the bulb allowing the wind to rock them over.

I planted my Radar sets at the weekend and also some Senshyu Yellow. I ordered them online from the Suttons website - you can order them as a twin-pack.
First time I have tried this (only having had my plot since April), so I'll be keeping everything crossed over the winter!
