There are things you can grow over winter, but the only thing I plant is garlic. I did grow onions one year but didn't think it was worth it. If you've got a new plot, I would concentrate on getting it thoroughly cleared and weeded so you have less to do in the spring.

Hi Liza, nice to see you on here, things you can do,
if it was me ??? oh yea, first draw a plan of your site, and what you want on it,
make a list of vegetables, you want to grow,
dig in loads of compost and remove as many weeds as possible,
make up a compost bin, get as many water butts as you can, if your allowed put up a shed, greenhouse, or polytunnel. fruit cage,
plant your fruit bushes, rhubarb etc,
sow some green manure, on dug soil
sow under plastic, glass, or small tunnels, sow or plant some broadbeans, early peas, spinage, spring cabbage, summer cauliflowers, late carrots, lettuce, radishes, garlic or autumn onions,
i hope this helps,
don't do to much at one time, take a flask of tea, and a seat down with you every time your at the plot and enjoy your self,
all the best, (take some pictures to keep a reminder of how it was and place them on here, we like to see how people do things,)
windy ;)

I would tend to go along with Caroline unless you live south of london.

You might get some growth under cloches or in a greenhouse/polytunnel. Don't rush it though - things grow much faster in the spring anyway.
I did plant my garlic yesterday (essential to get it in before the winter) , but I am only sowing indoors now for winter salad greens.

If you like Jerusalem Artichokes you could plant the tubers in January (even in the cool northern counties).

I also agree with Caroline, just spend time getting it under control and organised. Also think about the perennial plants you want to get in and order them e.g. Raspberries. Get their positions cleared and ready as a priority.

same as everyone else, you can plan out and plant your fruit beds, including strawberries  :)

I'll be planting garlic, overwintering onions and broad beans shortly, along with elephant garlic and walking onions.

Hi Liz I will be planting my wintering onions later today, we've had the sun 8) shining here since Wed so my soil will be just right for them, whats the weather like in sunny 8) Mansfield, and agree with other advice given.  ;D ;D ;D
