I have some really gorgeous perennial Dianthus that I want to keep. How do I overwinter them, do I just leave them alone and let them do their own thing or do I cut them back and if so by how much?
Also they are in a temporary bed till their permanent bed is prepared. When is the best time to transplant them?
Any advice appreciated.
Robbo.
All I ever do is remove the spent flower stalks, mainly so that they do not self seed all over the place, but also that is where any nasty problems usually begin, in the old flowers. Otherwise they are winter proof as long as the soil is well drained. Best time to replant is spring. They like a really well drained limey soil in full sun.
Thank you for that Palustris.
Dave.
