Title: overwintering dahlias grown this year from seed - worth it?
Post by: Hyacinth on October 04, 2008, 08:44:58
....or should they be treated as an annual?

They would be left outside in a window trough and therefore sheltered to an extent from frost......cut back & mulch or dump?

Thanks, Lishka

I grew Bishop's Children from seed in a Gardeners' World seed trial a few years ago and they have overwintered fine in the ground each year with no added protection.  I'm in London though.

Thanks for the quick reply! We're in Birmingham but because the trough is on s-facing wall under a window, with a good mulch it might be worth giving it a go as the trough will otherwise be cleared out for the winter.

I think they should be OK.  Nothing to lose by giving it a try?

Not in a trough I think. the cold is coming in from at least 3 different ways. Clean them up dust them with talc and hang them in the attic in an onion sack. (free from any greengrocer).

thanks ACE...won't be worth the hassle for the client....the friend who gave them to her said that this could be done, so no harm in my cutting them down next week & shoving a mulch over them....if they come up next year, all well and good.
