I have lots of sweetcorn growing but I do not think it is ready to pick yet. They are huge and tassles have gone brown. ??? The kernels don't seem juicy enough and they seem a bit pale in colour. I don't know whether to leave them on and hope they develop right or take them off and use them as they are. What would you do??
try popping a couple of kernels between your finger nails, if the liquid is clear give them more time - if its milky - they are ready - enjoy ;D
If the tassells have gone brown it probaby means they are ready to pick. Home grown sweetcorn is ususally paler than supermarket varieties so don't worry about that. It's unlikely that we'll get much more sunny weather to ripen them further so I'd say go for it now!
Well I had popped the kernels and it was not milky but does not seem to be developing anymore. I think I am going to have to just harvest them and hope for the best. Thanks for your help.
There is another way of knowing Sweetcorn is ripe

Enjoy Davey. :P ;D ;D ;D
As someone in the same boat as Cacran, I agree -that was very insensitive of you DavyW >:( :)
I noticed that my sweetcorn was pale when picked but turned a darker yellow after cooking...and was delicious judging by how the kids keep asking for it!! ;D
Ours was OK but a lot of fellow plot holders were complaining about patchy cobs.
The expert on-site said it was poor pollination probably due to the weather.
