Title: Where do you buy your plants from?
Post by: KLCG on September 29, 2008, 17:54:13
Hiya,

I am going to "cheat" next year and buy plants instead of doing everything from seed, I lost 3 lots of seedlings this year because the stupid plastic greenhouse colapsed or blew away, and all i got to plant was my seed potatoes, i was most disapointed  :'(
We are trying for another baby and hopefully will be pregnant by next march so dont really want to be faffing with seedlings  ;), so trying to get all the heavy work out of the way now.  I have been looking at defland nurseries does anyone else use plants instead?

Thank you

I've got some stuff from Delfland this year. Their stuff is great and works out cheaper than seeds for some things - if you  only want a certain number of plants and the rest of the seed will go to waste or even if the slugs etc have decimated your homegrown ones  and you want to replace them.

I'm lucky that with asking around I have found out about two fantastic nurseries only twenty minutes away and both nurseries carry a large variety of veg plants  :)

KLGG Delfland Nurseries are only 3/4 miles from me. They have an extremely good reputation. I haven't bought anything from there recently but when we were first starting the garden we bought a lot of mature (non edible) plants from them,we  were very satisfied.

I took a chance and bought mine of ebay, 100 plug plants for £7.50..http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=130245663620 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=130245663620) all plants were about 5" high.

Wish i had read the description better, then i would of chosen more variety instead of leaving it upto the seller.
He was very helpful when i asked to swap some cabbage for brussels and sent me 5 curly kal and 5 spinich for free.

Very happy with the way they are growing.

Agree with Delfland - best plants I've ever had. Am trying VegDirect because they have late stock.

Marshalls & Dobies do plants, but not small numbers.

Webbs of Wychbold (near Worcester) is good. Not particularly cheap but the plants looked way healthier than the ones I usually get in B&Q!  http://www.webbsdirect.co.uk/

tacking onto the end of this thread - who do folks recommend for fruit stock? Gooseberries, raspberries etc

Thanks

Being stupid here - can't find veg plants at Webbs??

Speaking of quality, I may be a bit over protective, but I always pot up Marshalls (& Sarah Raven's) offerings. [attachment=1]

Delfland plants are 2-3 times the size &, so far, do not need this.

1066,

If you look at this thread there are some fruit suppliers here.

Another vote for www.vegetableplantsdirect.co.uk  Very nice and helpful people, and decent quality plants at a good price.
