Title: Anyone had a frost yet?
Post by: OllieC on September 26, 2008, 10:33:33
Forecast of 6 C minimum on Saturday night, and that's in the sunny South!! Has anyone had a ground frost yet?

Not yet, but the hanging baskets are looking very sorry, as if it's been close once or twice.

No. Don't be silly, it is still the middle of summer here.

Perhaps the frozen wastelands of the north might suffer, (anywhere north of Farnham) I stayed at Sands last week and I must admit it was a bit nippy ;D

Had a touch of ground frost the other week here up in Dundee Scotland but it is now getting very nippy at night think its time for the electric blanket again.

No frost yet but I'm quite looking forward to it!

Nothing in the allotment would be killed by it (they'll even benefit from it) and I can get down to Winter digging ... one of my favourite activities  ;D

I can also bring flasks of veg soup up to the allotment and sit in Ahmed's SUPER-WARM SHED for hours on end :D

Er, I don't see how it's a wind-up when we're 3 degrees away from a potential ground frost in one of the warmest parts of the UK... but thanks for the input!

Same-ish area.  In the last week the baby sweetcorn which is still cropping has got   browning of the tip inside the cob and the growing tips on the sweet peppers have shrivelled and died.  I think getting down to around 10 degrees overnight has done it.  Chillis and toms still OK but not for long I think.  Thanks for the heads up Ollie, I'll get the fleece out!
Title: Re: Anyone had a frost yet?
Post by: thifasmom on September 30, 2008, 17:02:30
no actual frost but low temps have done the same thing with a couple of my sweet peppers and one of my three aubergines, so i dug up the other two to over winter in the conservatory since i only got flowers and no actual fruit, hope i can either get fruit over the winter or at least keep the plant going to get a early crop next year, ho hum :-\.

No we've not had a frost YET, but I don't think its far off from when we do.  :( :(

I hate this time of year, when you are clearing out the greenhouse of tomatoes, etc, and putting everything to bed for winter.

I don't think I particularly suffer from SAD, but I do get a bit 'down in the dumps' at this time of year.

It is sad to see the beds emptying, going to put the garlic and onions in soon.

Do you do anything in the glasshouse over winter?

Also winter containers and hanging baskets.

Planting bulbs and seed catalogues.

All that housework you neglected over the summer.

I have decided to decorate.Always like to do it in the winter. :)

Still around 13/14 here, but I notice the wind has gone around to the SW, this usually warms things up again but brings a lot of wet stuff with it.  Now I can see us having a manky Autumn with no really nice colour until November.

Not got lower than 5C here in Bucks. Mind you, the early morning dew feels ripe for freezing. Feels colder due to wind. I'm going to bring stuff in doors this weekend.

Title: Re: Anyone had a frost yet?
Post by: thifasmom on October 22, 2008, 12:14:38
i understand ground frost but how do you tell if you had an air frost ???
Title: Re: Anyone had a frost yet?
Post by: Barnowl on October 22, 2008, 12:17:28
Check out your car roof? But apparently I'm using the term wrongly  :-[

An air frost  actually means air temps below freezing, whereas ground frost means frozen at ground level only which can occur at around 4degC.

In our case the warmth of the ground prevented a ground frost but the low temp produced frost on objects that are a bit higher - in the air :)
Title: Re: Anyone had a frost yet?
Post by: thifasmom on October 22, 2008, 12:21:00
so is it basically if the ground is free of frost but hedges and other higher items have frost then its air frost ???, (if the ? seem dumb, remember I'm from the west indies and the only frost i grew up with was in the freezer ;D)

Title: Re: Anyone had a frost yet?
Post by: OllieC on October 22, 2008, 12:36:23
It's not dumb at all - I find it all quite confusing! The other thing is that water expands as it drops below 4C, so the cells of some plants & fruit burst even without a frost... as seen with strawberries in a cold fridge.

I have a thermometer probe hanging a foot off the ground and if it goes below 4C, I assume there's been a "frost". We got 3.7 last night.

Well I haven't a clue if we've had ground frost - but I wish it would hurry up because I want to dig my parsnips up!  Apart from sprouts, that's all that's survived the Noah's Ark weather down here!

We had a bad frost in early October (East Sussex) and all our beans and squashes and sweet potatoes shrivelled instantly. But on my other two plots, 10 minutes drive away, no sign of a frost and all the beans/squash still thriving.

The same happened today, heavy frost at home, none 10 minutes away, beans still flowering.

That's telling me something: overwinter my broad beans at the more distant plot, sow early spring and autumn crops there (and sweet potatoes), save the nearby plot for summer crops. Lovely to have a choice. It's taken me 2 years to notice the difference.

I though you were getting paranoid over frosts. We just don't get them until really late, even then they are gone before the sun comes up. Due to being surrounded by warm salt water.

This morning I had to pop up to Guildford and it was nice to eventually see some Autumn colour in the trees. I take it this is down to the low temperatures you are getting there. We are still green with a bit of mouldy brown down here.
But loads of leaves dropping because of the winds.

Got up to the allotment last night for the first time in a week.  French beans (climbing and dwarf) have turned up their toes,  as have courgettes and squash so it must have got fairly cold. Funnily enough the runner beans are still going but tonight is forecast to be around freezing.  Better fleece up the brugmansia and spud bags.

we had a week of frosts and a day of snow from  the 27th October, here in Bucks. Most plants were uneffected though - the "Scaredy Cat" i had died, and the french marigolds i had.

I still have a purple Nicotinia in full flower and several strawberries that are ripening nicely. My Fuschias are in flower too, although they lost about a fifth of their leaves...

I'm cross about my strawberries.  They're perpetuals and last year the second flush finished in November.  This year I got a handful about 4 weeks ago and that's it.  They're still flowering but it's too wet and with no sunshine they don't come to anything.
