No you are right ,not at all funny,I fail to see the connection. :(
yes the Tories aren't the Nasty Party anymore
It was meant to be a light hearted comment.
I was not in the business of calling them Nazi..........that is going to far, even for me.
no it was that Conservative minister who used that phrase to suggest what peoples opinions had been of them in the past - Teresa May perhaps? I'm beyond politics anyway - it's all about helping Hard Working Families, and i don't qualify on either count. Disenfranchised!
Are you talking about employment??
I expect they are going to Birminham to get in touch with the lower classes.

it was just an expression that all the political parties used all the time at the last election, as if no-one else mattered. i'm just cynical, and i've got a headache

^^ It's all a bit queer is that. I was listening to the Jeremy Vine phone in yesterday lunch time and this was one of his topics and there were very mixed witness accounts from people actually living there, ranging from a scooter ralley, a music festival, a neo-nazi gathering and a few other things.
As far as ten thousand tories descending upon your city, Betula, perhaps you might need several cups of tea and a long lie down afterwards? ;) ;D

Indeed. The Nazis were, after all, National Socialists and therefore politically to the left. I suppose that if they'd been right wing they'd have called themselves National Tories. ;D

Aww, he's only joking! If the Tories wanted to appeal to the inbred populous, they'd be having it on the "Southern Island"!!!
I did wonder if any of them might like to hang around in Birmingham after their beanfeast and visit some of the misery that their hero caused? They could make a day of it, "here's where we used to have factories", "here's where we housed the unemployed people that we took the jobs from and then called lazy", "here's where we have ongoing poverty and social deprivation as a result of our policies in the 80's"...
You know, sometimes I think Cameron's got a point. And then I remember the misery and suffering I saw when growing up.
When my elder son (currently 30) reached the age for voting he commented :I've never known anything but Thatcher and I know that stinks.. What he didn't know was who, if anyone, was worth voting for.
National socialists in Germany - right wing murdering racist fascists.
Birmingham has some lovely parts and many that are hellholes. So do most large cities I have visited. Think Paris?
I grew up in Glasgow to the tapping of the riveters on Clydeside building ships. The Clyde where i grew up (in a poncey middle class area) is silent now. The unions killed off that industry as they did the car industry by inflationary wage claims. Or did they? Fat cat pay offs, pension deals and salaries for the bosses might have been part of it?

Can't we sell off IOW to the French, just like we've done with nuclear power

Do you think Ace has recently been on a 'how to win friends and influence people' course? :-\

Yup, he called round but the butler wouldn't let him in. Sent him off to Enfield instead.

Birmingham has a great city centre now.The Bull Ring has been rebuilt and the canal area modernised out of recognition.I am particularly proud of Synphony Hall.
Yes some areas are grotty, short of knocking them down and starting again, what do you do?However some areas are lovely. We moved to Meriden, just a few miles out of the city but we intend to move back eventually. Not a good time to move at the moment.
Ollie,my father lost his job in the car industry as did many of his generation and it was hard times all round. Many skilled men scratting round for low paid jobs.It could make you weep.

How many motorways do you have carving up the countryside? we have none.
How many beggars do you have on the streets? we have none. (well there was the big issue bloke, but we told him the F. off and get a proper job)
Can you let your kids play on the street and wander the downs? We can
Traffic jams? I had to wait last year for a few minutes when they were sweeping and cleaning.
Swim in the sea? or a pool full of p!ss
Unemployment? Just a few of yours that come over now and again.
Allotments? plenty to go round or loads of spare space in our front gardens. They are not used as offroad parking here.
I have to go over on the ferry quite often, I get back as quick as I can. I know where I would rather live.

You need a mortgage just to get the ferry. You are so ripped off.About the most expensive ferry running isn't it.?
Yes you have lovely scenery, feel it a privilege not something to gloat about.
Your the one in the Zoo,just something to look at and then head home again. :o
The ferries are expensive to keep the riff raff off. Oer thats a lot of f's without swearing ;D
Ace you mustn't post photos like that, you will make people come to the IOW and then it would be too busy - go and find a horrid picture - one of the beaches crowded on a bank holiday - you've got to keep them away not encourage them! ;)

Maybe it depends on personal experience. We lived in Brum for 5 years, and indeed my two eldest were born there.
In spite of that, it wasn't an enjoyable experience. In very few other places in the world have I encountered so much crass materialism, casual racism, and sheer ignorance. Well, OK, perhaps Riyadh beats it on all three counts. But I wouldn't want to live there again, either.

As you have already stated we are a very big retirement home. But it is mainly the rich who come here. All of a sudden they have a garden to look after and haven't got a clue. Step in (big trumpet fanfare) ACE to the rescue. Not everyone mind you, as I only work for millionaires. Go on scoff if you like, but it is the truth. I interview my clients, they only get me if I like them and their money.
Personally I'd rather live in a city any day ACE, I live in Glasgow where I'm 30 minutes from mountains (real countryside) and I get to be around a huge diversity of people including Big Issue sellers most of who I like and have a laugh with as I'm not a narrow minded snob. I also enjoy a drive in a car sometimes and going to a variety of restaurants, bars etc etc.
I especially love the markets that are now around the 'dreaded' red road flats where all the diverse cultures (bloody asylum seekers) sell their home made goods and talk to the locals.
Also kids wander the streets all the time, in fact I dont remember the last one that was badly hurt, I feel this is good for them as it makes them grow up having a real idea of what the world is like and not some snooty false blinkered vision.
I prefer the real world I'd die of boredom and frustration at the greedy middle class attitudes on your island.

Well there are cities, and CITIES. Glasgow must have been the best I have lived in. A very long time ago, before Frankie Vaughan stuck his oar in.
I lived over the road from the Botanical Gardens and the BBC studios. We used to go up in the Partick Hills when the weather was good and trampse for miles without seeing a soul. I think that is where my love of Celtic music came from and where I learnt to play the squeezebox.
So you at least come top of the list of cities ACE has had to live in.
Which are =
Leeds *
Lincoln
Southampton***
Portsmouth*
Bristol ***
Brighton***
Glasgow *****
Ipswich (I know it's a town)
London**

No stars for Lincoln - from some it would be an insult, from Ace I am honoured. I live in one of the greenest most attractive cities in the UK, with what is commonly known as one of the top three Cathedrals in Europe (the other two being on the continent). It is now friendly and not parochial and you can learn a variety of Slavic and Germanic languages just walking down the street. The only problem is that the nearest significant hills are over 40 miles away. Oh, and the tories threatening to sell off the lotties!

lol betula. ;D ;D The IoW is beginning to look like an enormous garlic bulb.
I think people that live in coastal areas seem to think that they are the only ones plagued with 'tourists'.
ACE referred to them as grockles, which I understand to be the Devonian term for pebbles. The other term down the SW is emmets, which I believe is the Cornish term for ants.
We live in the small village of Alton (as in Towers), and the term for the 'tourists' here is strugs. Some of the 'visitors' to the 'Resort' use the road through the village like the first ride. We moved here when there was only the gardens, before Broom was allowed to erect the corkskrew (and a lot of villagers know where they would like to stick it ;D).
We have learned to live with it. We know where to go and where not to go, particularly on a Bank Holiday. The park seems to think that 20 local residents free passes will keep the natives restive. ;D ;D
This is a beautiful part of the country. I would never knock someone else's area. I might not wish to move further north, as it's cold enough here without moving further north.

Racism, yes theare is some, but for such a multi racial population I think we all rub along pretty well really.Remember racism is not something only white people indulge in.
Ignorant............... Strange that,it is a word I may use to describe your posting.
I endorse Melbourne's comment about 'casual racism' in Birmingham and I've lived here 24 years now - God help us all if this level of perceived white superiority is endemic over-the-board in England. My horror is that I hear it from 40-yr old acquaintances who forward 'jokes' which aren't even fit for Watershed; those of my own age; and also from the majority of my clients in their 70s-80s. My shock is that they all assume that I, of course, also endorse their narrow bigotted and ignorant views without even attempting to find out if I am 'like-minded'.
So what do I do?
I don't comment, is what....how the heck can I even begin to change such deeply-entrenched views?
If 'ignorance' is bliss, it is more than folly to be perceived to be 'wise'.

Thank you for that posting. Exactly the same thing used to enrage us. I regret to say that occasionally, just occasionally, when someone made a particularly offensive comment about "Pakis", I'd respond straight faced, "Ah well, it could be worse. They could be Spics." They'd be a brief silence and look of puzzlement, but they normally took the hint and changed the subject.
We seem to have gone off topic a bit, from open season on Brummie bashing to racism.
I think political correctness breeds more racism. When you get Scarborough banning Easter and Christmas in its Coastal College, 'for fear of offending non-Christians', it causes more trouble than it solves. The local muslim clerics, hindus, sikhs, et al will be up in arms, They are not offended. They feel they are being held as scapegoats, and of course such action strengthens the hand of the BNP.
Britain is not a multi-cultural society because political correctness will not allow it to be. It divides, and put barriers where there arn't/shouldn't be any.
valmarg
Agreed, Valmarg!
Back to Birmingham, and whoever will forget the Christmas we had Winterval... ::) ;D Who the heck in the Council House thought up that little gem!
Yep Hyacinth, I think its about 10 years since that bit of PC stupidity. You will find that the ethnic minority religions did not want it and were more upset about it than the Christians, hence the fast backtracking.
The problem is the PC gestapo have learned nothing.
They kowtow to the minorities, whether it be religion, or whatever.
Whatever they do they divide rather than unite.

This is indeed true. :(
But we must remember that "multiculturalism" doesn't mean that we all live together in one marvellous eclectic mix. That's "cultural diversity". Our PC friends actually want many separate cultures - ghettoes in other words. Divisiveness and suspicion are meat and drink to them, and of course generate huge numbers of jobs to inflate their bureaucracy.
One of the funniest PC-gone-wrong stories was the Huddersfield school that renamed its panto "Three Little Puppies" instead of "Three Little Pigs". In their ignorance, they didn't realise that if there's an animal considered more unclean in Islam than pigs, it's dogs. ;D

Twas always Spanish round here: Spics (Spaniards) and Eyeties (Italians) were the terms of choice of all the over 70s and the apprentice BNP members when I was growing up. Stop being so precious. I suppose a joke about and englishman, irishman and scotsman would be offensive if you looked hard enough. This is where the problems lies. Everyone jumping up and down at the slightest point made. I am not posting in stuff like this anymore.
I live in a SMALL town where there are lots of people from all over the world, i embrace them fully. i would not want to change it. They have each contributed in some ways. I find you deeply offensive with your opionated ways. I read a few of your posts and some are bordering on school ground bullying :-

"One for the mouse and one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow."
When I was growing up, the term 'Paki' was an abbreviation of Pakistani. Nothing more. 'Spic' and 'Eyetie' as well. If you find them offensive, how do you cope with being called a Scot? And what about nicknames: Taff or Jock for instance? Any name, in fact any subject at all, can be made derogatory simply by adding the prefix 'effin'.
When we think about diversity we need look no further than our own doorsteps. Think of the local rivalries in our own areas - Yorkshire and Lancashire for instance. These have been with us for years - way before any modern day immigration or race relations act. We've had God knows how many separate kingdoms throughout history. The fact is, these tiny islands of ours have always been intensely tribal.
Me, I'm perfectly happy with my Cockney rhyming slang title - being both Scottish and disabled - and you can call me a Sweaty Raspberry any time you like.
;D
Well, they've all buggered off back from whence they came. ;D ;D

Who has, Valmarg?
The Tories who descended on Birmingham - which is what this thread started as ::) ::) ::)
Yes and everyone stuck to the theme, didn't they?
;D
Been watching this thread but something in the title reminded me of this song:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=v12fqh-Utws
Forty thousand headmen couldn't make me change my mind
If I had to take the choice between the deafman and the blind
I know just where my feet should go and that's enough for me
I turned around and knocked them down and walked across the sea
Hadn't travelled very far when suddenly I saw
Three small ships a-sailing out towards a distant shore
So lighting up a cigarette I followed in pursuit
And found a secret cave where they obviously stashed their loot
Filling up my pockets, even stuffed it up my nose
I must have weighed a hundred tons between my head and toes
I ventured forth before the dawn had time to change its mind
And soaring high above the clouds I found a golden shrine
Laying down my treasure before the iron gate
Quickly rang the bell hoping I hadn't come too late
But someone came along and told me not to waste my time
And when I asked him who he was he said, 'Just look behind'
So I turned around and forty thousand headmen bit the dirt
Firing twenty shotguns each and man, it really hurt
But luckily for me they had to stop and then reload
And by the time they'd done that I was heading down the road
No political persuasion offered but makes you think - how long ago was that recorded too

Highly unlikely ;D ;D
But I can't understand the relevance of the 'Forty thousand headmen' poem.

Sorry Valmarg - was meant to be a bit of light hearted deep thought - if there's such a thing ;)
