hi EJ - Emma Jane,
Ive been searching the archive's and stumbled across your posts on pineapple growing and gathered your the queen on the topic ;).
i have a pineapple top which i twisted off as per your instructions, this was done on Monday and i observed that it already had some tiny rootlets so i removed a few of the bottom leaves and put it on a shelf to cool.
it looks nice and dry now and i plan to pot up tomorrow in regular potting compost. my question is, can i leave it in my conservatory even when the heating isn't on or should i bring it into the house where the temp doesn't drop below 18 degrees till its properly rooted.
thanks in advance for your reply,
thifasmom.
hi there im not ej and im by no way a pineapple expert but thought this link would be helpful ;)www.unirom.co.uk/nhaggett/MyPineapples/mypineapples.html
hi and thanks for the link great pictures for reference i have bookmarked it.
Thifasmom, my pineapples are now in permanent planters in the conservatory, and our heating only comes on in there during the winter, and then only for a couple of hours in the evening and a couple in the early morn. So long as your conservatory doesn't get frosty on the inside, it should be absolutely fine. Also, even in the depths of winter, if the sun does shine, the conservatory can get very warm so they should be fine. Good luck, and be warned, they can become huge, my largest has a spread of over 6 foot now.

thanks for the reply emma, i will keep in the conservatory then. over 6ft :o you must have one hell of a conservatory ;D.
I wish I had a conservatory EJ.
After reading your valuable advice, I succesfully grew a 'top' early 2007. It stood in the greenhouse during the summer and became a good solid plant. It lived on a window sill in the house during the winter & was put out again this last 'summer'. It became too large to take inside again, so offered it on 'Freecycle'. The response was amazing. Hope it fruits in it's new home.

My pineapple top is growing away lovely been in its pot since March .
Next year perhaps a fruit :) :)
If you do get fruit, don't rush to pick it. We leave ours until when you open the conservatory door, you can smell the fruit, then we pick it and eat it the same day. My god they are so delicious I can't begin to tell you. I haven't been fortunate enough to visit a country where you could pick fresh, ripe pineapples, so this luxury is just blissful. The juice is thick and sweet - I do believe you could just stick a straw in and drink the entire fruit. Good luck.
Well fingers crossed Emma Jane for next year . :)
