Title: Getting rid of summer pests
Post by: meg_gordon on September 20, 2008, 11:41:47
Hi everyone

Like most of this community, I have had my fair share of nasties this year - and I was wondering what everyone does to "fumigate" the greenhouse and get rid of everything before the winter?  I remember a few years ago you could buy something like a firework and after it was lit, it filled the greenhouse with smoke and killed everything but cant find this in the shops.

that would be something like a Nicotine Bomb, though Google tells me that's a tune from the combo Mission Of Burma. Jolly tune too!

Perhaps you can still buy sulphur bombs instead

edit - sulphur candle like this. Never used one

Thanks for this - my father in law has already tried this and it didn't burn too well - the one I was describing is like a small cone made out of cardboard and it burns like billyo!

Maybe I will just have to get out the sponge and bleach spray:-(  I was looking for something a little less like hard work ;)

you can get something very much like you describe from pet shops (called flea bombs)
dont know if they would kill greenhouse bugs though

I have always used a sulphur candle.  Never had any problems.  If the wick is temperamental - just put a piece of string dipped in oil,  or a piece of grease proof paper to use as a wick instead.  It will burn.  It takes 12 hours to burn down.

I use it to clean my hen cree twice per year.  Closing off the entrance leaving the hens outside for the duration.  So I find eggs all over the place on these days. :)
