Title: Lincoln
Post by: Carol on September 17, 2008, 19:59:41
We cancelled our Holiday touring in Europe due to the Lorry fire in the Channel Tunnel.  Everything was booked and because of cancellations etc our plans went up the creek.

I have always fancied seeing Lincoln properly so we are planning a trip down there next week.  Apart from the Cathedral what else is a 'must see' in Lincoln.

Thanks.

:D

I lived in Grimsby for eight years and was a regular visitor to Lincoln.

The castle is worth a look.

Steep Hill is a good place if you are fit.Lots of nice shops, well there used to be.

The market town of Louth is not to far away.I used to like to visit on A Wednesday for the market and have lunch in the Masons Arms. :)

Thanks Betula.  Not sure if we are taking the Car or Train.

I am sure we will find something to see and do.  We passed through Lincoln couple of years back and I liked what I saw while waiting in traffic because we had to drive right through the middle of town.

Hi Carol,

So sorry to hear about your holiday in Europe  :'(  Will you be compensated/refunded?

Here is a link to the Lincolnshire Tourist Information website which might be of some help in deciding where to visit during your stay.

Last time I was there, 5 weeks ago, there appeared to be everlasting roadworks on all approach roads to/from the south (A46). :(

Also take the number 6 from Lincoln to Skegness but get off the bus at Burgh-le-Marsh and visit the working Windmill built in 1811, very interesting went round it last Sunday :)

Thanks folks for all your advice on lincoln.

Sam.  We will get the channel tunnel refunded and also various hotels on the route have given a full refund.  The others we have lost but because we pay into Royalties with Royal Bank of Scotland, a claim is going in for them.  We will try again next year to do this 'tour'.

How did your Scottish Hol. go.?  I kept watching the weather forecast for you and despite having rotten weather here I think you must have had it mixed.

;) ;)

Attached to the Usher Art gallery is The Collection - a museum.  As well as Boultham Mere there is Whisby Nature Park and Whisby Garden Centre is (at least used to be) worth a visit.  On a walk round Lincoln (uphill) there are a few Roman Sites - e.g. gates including Newport Arch which you can still drive and the through and the remains of the old Forum Colonnades which still poke through the tarmac on Bailgate.  Bishops Palace is near the Cathedral and was once the most powerful building in England - the Bishops ruled!  The Arboretum is a Capability Brown designed urban parkland.  Decent real ale pubs (if that's your bag) include the Adam and Eve (not far from the Cathedral) and the Green Dragon.  My local (Dog & Bone) is excellent but is on a side street off Monk's Road.

If I think of anything else, I will add another post.

The Golden Eagle is brill for real ale (bottom end of High St near the South Common) and it's a lovely old coachhouse with a garden and I agree The Wig and Mitre is worth a visit

Lincoln City football ground on the otherhand isn't, we are rubbish at the moment ;)

Oops, glad I caught this before you disappear on Sunday.  We had a lovely time, thank you.  The weather was very up and down.  If it had snowed, we'd have had four seasons in one day!  We had a good mixture of weather from sun, pouring rain, quite windy or completely overcast - but never cold, thankfully.  I wish we'd had more good weather but doesn't everyone on holiday? (unless they're in the Bahamas? LOL) Beautiful location and I wish I was still there now!  ;D

Have a lovely time away :)

I lived in Lincoln for a while back in the mid sixties, I thought if the world were to have piles thats where they would be.

The natives where very distrustful and also very nosey. I put this down to them living in their own small worlds and not being well travelled, even in the war when most of them were in reserved occupations.

Ace - the people of Lincoln invented and built most of the war machinery that is why their occupations were reserved.  I agree that it was once a bit of a parochial backwater (not our fault - that was a fault of a Tory landowner in the 19th Century!!!) Tis far more cosmopolitan now duck! ;D

PS - I worked in the Golden Eagle and that is where I still drink on matchdays (I used to serve the current landlord) and can vouch that is an excellent pub.  I am not sure about the current state of the Wig - I heard it had been taken over and had undergone radical change which is why I didn't include it.

I also have memories of Lincoln dating back to the late Fifties and early sixties but I must say that my memories are much rosier than Ace's. Mind you I was just a child at the time but I seem to remember people being friendly, warm and welcoming.

Now, you leave my mate out of it.

He had dinner at one of our clients. Naturally he had a tour of the garden. The husband of the property (who thinks his wife is wasting her money on the gardener) asked Alan what he thought needed doing in the garden.

Alan replied 'Your wife has one of the best gardeners on the island' then added 'he  himself would be pushed to be able to do better'.

Voted on by residents:
Green - cos we grow more of what you eat than any other County in the UK you ungrateful get
Blue - because we have loads of sky being so flat and loads of sea.
Yellow - because we have sandy beaches and yellow bellies
The red cross and fleur de lys because that is the flag of the City of Lincoln.

Ace - I have nobody on ignore but I am tempted by you because you can be such an obnoxious prat!

It is strange how different things are acceptable in different areas.

When I lived in Grimsby it took me a long time to get my head around Blokes calling other blokes Duck.

Strictly a male to female thing here.

A bloke saying  duck to another one could end up with a thump on the nose LOL.

My dad was reserved occupation not because he wanted to be but in 1938 when he was 35 he went  to enlist in the Royal Navy but because he had four kids and being 35  they told him to go home out of five brothers he was the only one not accepted, believe me this gutted my dad, through the war he shovelled coal to feed six Lancashire boilers in a ammunition factory, my dad was not a stand back he was a hard case and would of gladly made ACE feel very comfortable if he ever came gobbing off up in Lancashire ;)
