Title: vynal -> CD ?
Post by: Si D on September 16, 2008, 14:16:07
given:

A load of old LPs (kids - ask yer parents)
A turntable and an amp
A PC or two (one with XP and one with Vista)
Some blank CDs
Very very little technical knowledge

how would you go about transferring the tunes from the records to the CDs (ideally with breaks between each track) ?
Also, how would you get them into a format that would go on to one of those ipod thingies ?

thanks in advance for any ideas.

You would buy one of these:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0412717609.1221578265@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceiadefeigdhfkcflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=SimpleSearchProducts&low_bound=0&up_bound=0&criterion=turntable&AtimeStamp=3399030681

Plug the USB into your PC,  play the vinyl,  download back onto CD ROM.  I would buy the £79 option.  The £139 option has an automatic docking system for ipods.  Best thing is;  once you have loaded all your vinyl onto advanced technology you can always sell on the record player.

download audacity its a freeware program. record your lp from a usb turntable or turntable through your soundcard.
you can then save your lp to hard drive as wav files  as individual tracks.
then you have the option of burning to audio cd or ripping as mp3 files.

Find a good quality record 'cleaner' too.  Once the audio files are created, they can be run through it and a lot of the pops and clicks are removed. I have managed to get some very clean but the software is on my old PC and I cannot remember what it is called!

thanks peterpiper, I shalll down load it and have a go.

that's the trouble with UTube, you have a spare 5 mins and find yourself watching loads of old vids fromt he 70s and 80s, next thing you know is that you've unboxed your record collection and you just now your Mrs is going to do her nut when she finds the spare room full of audio equipment and LPs.

An interesting read.  I have remembered the name of the one I used - it is called GrooveMechanic - it was good but is probably very old and surpassed now.

One other point - I also use Audacity and find it a useful program for general ausio editing.  It does have a depopper on it but I have never used it.
