I've been picking mine for the past few weeks. It's my 1st go at growing them as I only took on my plot in May 2007 but they are so so sweet and totally different to the shop bought ones. I planted 24 plants and have 26 fat juice cobs and about the same again in much smaller ones which will probably not ripen now. I've no idea how to put a photo on this post but there is one in my gallery if you're interested.

need to ask you folks, I have been growing  sweetcorn ( no idea what sort as Dad got them for me) - they have been wonderful all summer long, looked healthy, but did not really ripen- tried a few and they were all chewy after cooking so had to throw away - I finally managed to get one last week ( aboslutely beautiful really, really sweet and much better than shops) and got one more today however most of them have just died off and I will be lucky if I even manage another one - originally there were loads but they have mostly just withered away - what do you think i have done wrong??? would love to try again next year but would like a larger yield.

Sue

Patience is a Virtue?

Not up to standard, but grateful for smaller mercies!

When freezing do you blanch them first? I know there are conflicting views so I blanched 5 and just froze the other 4 what do you do?

I've had some really good sweetcorn but at the same time  some  have been rubbish but over all I can't complain, I slipped up by planting two types to close together and they crossed pollonated which gave a smaller cob and  being white in colour :)

I had my first ever home grown sweetcorn yesterday - from allotment to mouth in about 12 mins!  I was even very kind and shared the 1 ripe cop with my OH.  As I think i'll have to wait a few days for the rest to ripen i'm wishing i'd had it all to myself!  :P

I just wrap them individually in cling film and throw into a freezer drawer...

I freeeze them with their coats on.

For cooking I zap in the microwave ( pre thawed) for 3 minutes and  strip off their greenery.

I find that the greenery keeps them from drying out in the freezer, works a treat for me.
